When we had a fence replaced in our old house the builder asked which way we wanted the fence.....did we want to see the back or the front, we could choose. The best place to check is on deeds or with land registry. Ones solicitor should really always clarify it when you buy. Some of the nasiest legal wrangles are about boundaries so its always best to be certain at the begining.
