tanith, sounds logical but it might be that the previous owners had fence put in other way round. When we had a fence replaced in our old house the builder asked which way we wanted the fence.....did we want to see the back or the front, we could choose. The best place to check is on deeds or with land registry. Ones solicitor should really always clarify it when you buy. Some of the nasiest legal wrangles are about boundaries so its always best to be certain at the begining.

Well if the 'nice' flat side of the wall is facing away from you its usually your boundary. If you have the supporting pillars on your side then its usually your neighbours.

No its not a fence it is a brick wall, as it is a walled garden

If there is a fence or wall if you are seeing the 'back' (ie: side showing the struts on the back of the fence panels, or supporting pillars in a brick wall) of the wall/fence then that is usually your boundary.. (

Only with more modern-build semis, when the hedge/fence to your right as you look down your back garden is usually deemed to be 'yours'.

The house is 180 years old and although we have got deeds , which if you think about is pretty lucky , tthat they have survived all these years in those days things weren"t so clear cut. Just wondered if there was a right /left rule .

It's either on your deeds, or a landlord will clarify for you.

According to our neighbours in our last house, if it falls down, it's yours!

Can I pose a question? As you look down the garden which is your wall right or left ? Does anyone know ?
