"Is there anyone from your youth whose music you still follow?"

Of course - anything before the mid-fifties, really! Basie, Ellington, Shaw, Goodman for starters. Al Bowlly, Frank Sinatra, Billie Holliday, Rosemary Clooney, Les Paul & Mary Ford...and on and on... the thing is, back then they could tell the difference between B-flat and a boiler explosion!

Leonard Cohen songs always seem to be unbelievably miserable – music specially written for hanging yourself.

Granted, he never has had the best voice in the world, to which he refers in 'The Tower of Song' but he knows how to put across his lyrics. As with Bob Dylan, it's all about the lyrics for me.

I've never worn a tweed skirt in my puff but could have easily qualified as a member of The Knicker Brigade!

Yes, I have several of these
They are fabulous, slightly stretchy, keep you warm and most importantly, don't ride up.

Feetlebaum
As one who lived in a bedsitter and wore tweed skirts, and was a member of what was known as 'The Knicker Brigade' (no not what you're thinking, it referred to the fact that our skirts were so short that when we ascended the large spiral staircase at the entrance to the institution where I studied, men of a certain type could see our knickers), it comes as no surprise to me that the charms of Mr Ferry escape you.
this is for the pleasure of hot-blooded GNers everywhere.

JO4 Occasionally, but not with jeans.

Tweed skirts were too itchy for me (tender little flower). Even with the "slips" we used to wear then. Does anyone still wear a slip? smile

Each to his or her own I think. I too had a Dansette......enjoyed mugs of coffee and was known to possess a tweed skirt or two. shock

JO4 Tue 11-Sept-12 09:22:10

Eh - not so much of the lumpy!

And those Dansettes did good service. (wistful sigh)

feetlebaum Tue 11-Sept-12 09:17:08

Oh no! Memories of lumpy girls in tweed skirts, in bed sitters with gas fires and lino floors -- and a Dansette grinding out Leonard Cohen! Fog round the street-lamps outside... mugs of instant coffee and full ash-trays...

The charm of Mr Cohen escapes me. Ditto Mr Ferry, another of the regurgitation school of vocalists (like Bowie).

Ooh Baubles.... jealous.
Though can't halp wondering what his voice is like at the age of 77!!!
Yes, in the last few years we have seen Eric Clapton and Bryan Ferry.

I'm off to Dublin tomorrow with DH, our son & his girlfriend. My mother thinks the reason for the visit is to spend time with her, however the real purpose is to see Leonard Cohen in concert wink. I've enjoyed his music for forty years now but until now have never seen him live so I'm quite excited.

He is still touring at the age of 77.
