Funny old sayings that give away (y)our age

I said at work today 'I doff my hat to you' and my colleague looked at me blankly. I also recently said 'photo-stat machine' till a young colleague said 'Why do you say that, instead of photocopier?' (blush). I wondered why myself, and then remembered about roneo-stat machines, but decided against trying to explain to a 23 year old. No wonder DD sometimes says to me "How do you still fool them at work, woman?" grin

I remember that word, gaga, but I haven't heard since in Yorkshire either. N British dialect, I suspect.

Lilygran Wed 12-Sept-12 10:44:47

Plimsolls, anyone? And the Banda machine in an enclosed space - how hazardous was that?

Gagagran Wed 12-Sept-12 10:41:39

Does anyone remember a strange word we used for sticking plasters i.e spetch? Or was it just a local word in my Yorkshire village? Not heard it used since I was a child!

feetle, in our house, if we had a telly, the answer to that would be 'dust'.

@MiceElf "Liberty bodice, knicker elastic, darning socks, and the dreaded belt, pins and pads."

Oh! Soap and water...l wash your mouth out...

I still say 'It's five-and-twenty past...', frock (of course), no doubt if I had to refer to a lady's 'suit' it would be as a 'costume', wireless (natch),
gramophone (sometimes) .

HOWEVER

It annoys me when someone asks, re the TV, "What's on the other side?"
Of the hundreds of channels I have, which is "the other"?

Bags Wed 12-Sept-12 10:35:24

ogm, oh yes! DH wore daps in S Wales.

Anagram Wed 12-Sept-12 10:14:07

I do that too, sometimes, enterprisegran blush

This morning I asked my 4 year old grandson if he had 'pulled the chain' after going to the toilet. I actually stopped in my tracks and wondered why on earth I was asking that instead of saying 'flush the toilet'.

wheniwasyourage yes that I was thinking of I had a red one.

Swimsuit, but when DD2 was little she used to say swimming suit, which we all liked, and sometimes I say that too. I don't say bathing costume because it always reminds me of the pink (don't like pink) ruched one I had at the age of about 6. Record, yes, video (meaning DVD), wireless, pictures, and I refuse to call continental quilts(when were they last called that!) duvets, referring to quilts and quilt covers. Oh dear, I am a grumpy old woman after all. hmm

Bags Wed 12-Sept-12 09:23:27

In Yorkshire we wore sandshoes. In Lancashire we wore pumps. In Scotland we wear gym shoes.

Or the ubiquitous trainers.

nanaej Wed 12-Sept-12 09:14:57

Swumsuit! but i think it is only in shop/ sales that it ever seems to matter! As long as we communicate the actual words we use are less important!

Anagram Wed 12-Sept-12 09:12:36

What's wrong with 'swimming costume'? confused What's the new word?

Littlenellie Wed 12-Sept-12 09:03:43
