DD and SIL have been visiting Yosemite Park on their honeymoon and I have just seen this on the internet. I wish I hadn't.
"US health officials are warning almost a quarter of a million people that they may have been exposed to a deadly virus if they stayed at Yosemite national park.
They have confirmed that a ninth person has been diagnosed with hantavirus, a rodent-borne illness blamed for three deaths connected to the park in California.
National Park Service spokesman John Quinley said the victim, from California, had stayed in the 'Signature' cabins in the park's historic Curry Village in early July.
The majority of the cases involved guests at the cabins. One visitor stayed at High Sierra camps in Yosemite's wilderness areas.
The disease - for which there is no known cure - is carried in the faeces, urine and saliva of deer, mice and other rodents, and carried on airborne particles and dust."

What is it about coincidences like this? And I still wish I hadn't read it.

There has been quite a lot about this in the media over the past couple of weeks, gracesmum, so I would think by the time your DD and SIL visited there would have been precautionary measures in place and everyone would be well aware of the problems. Think positive! sunshine

No not unreasonable to worry - it is only natural. I think we do worry more when our nearest and dearest are in 'foreign parts'. You would not be so concerned if they had visited a British City where there had been a similar outbreak. I am sure they will be fine.

How is that this virus has started affecting humans all of a sudden? Yosemite has been visited by millions over the years, with no ill effects. The cabins will have been throughly cleaned and sprayed, and there are warnings all over the place not to go near any wild animals. Like the fuss about pet farms here last year, precautions will now be upgraded, people will be more aware, and hopefully there will be no more outbreaks.

gracesmum work out the statistics from all the thousands (hundreds of thousands?) of people that visit Yosemite, 9 have the virus and sadly 3 of the were fatally infected, add the timing of your family's visit in and the chances of them having the bad luck of contracting it are very, very slim. Sometimes I think some of these reports are just scaremongering to fill some newspaper inches hmm
