Alice if there's a danger that he might embarrass you by wearing it in the presence of your friends and family, I think the kindest approach would be to ask him to put it on, with all the things he might wear it with, and give a carefully considered opinion along the lines of, 'Well, it's obviously good quality/value for money/ beautiful fabric (choose most appropriate), but that colour doesn't really flatter you/ the trouser length is a bit short/ I think the fabric might pill/ of course it's dryclean only' and perhaps offer to accompany him to get a replacement?
What was the garment by the way - a sort of reindeer jumper of the kind bought for him by Mark Darcy's mother in Bridget Jones

Get him to wear it in front of your children, that works for us! Having said that my DH is fully aware that he doesn't have much clothes sense so will ask me if not sure and is not offended if I tell him something doesn't work. He told me last year on holiday that one of my new dresses didn't suit me. Shame he hadn't done it before while I could still take it back! IMO you can worry too much about their tender egos.

I tell him not to go shopping on his own, he usually gets the message.

I'm very subtle 'that'll do nicely for the allotment' usually gets the message across, though I love the idea of getting him to don it in front of the kids!

Ask him: 'When did you start shopping at Primark?' Unless, of course, he got it there!

True Anagram mine shops so rarely he doesn't know the names of the ones he does go to apart from M & S for his Blue Harbour jeans.

I accidently washed a hideous jumper belonging to DH on a 90 degree wash. I'm just so careless

It's funny this should all come up today. Mr absent was sent off to buy some chinos for a "smart casual" do on Saturday, having left the last pair in a hotel bedroom. He duly appeared with some perfectly respectable trousers in a perfectly respectable colour but claimed to be unable to find a suitably coloured shirt in his size. He wanted something other than blue which, apart from white, is about the only colour he has. (That he's taken to wearing something other than white is quite a step forward.) I trotted off to M & S and came back with a selection of plain and striped coloured shirts – and now he can't make up his mind which one to wear on Saturday. (He didn't think of M & S.) Meanwhile, he's decided to order a couple of pairs of chinos from a newspaper advertisement and, wisely, consulted me about the colours.

Top tips Jane, thanks, I'll give them a try. The garment is not quite as embarrassing as the Bridget Jones jumper, but it does feature a logo. The sad thing is he would look so nice in a well-cut suit, but he's hard to convince.

I tred to leave an awful jacket of his in a hotel wardrobe at the end of our hols earlier this year. Sadly he found it & then was all hurt that I'd do such a thing - but I still have it in for that jacket!

Anything I hate goes into the ironing basket - it's guaranteed not to surface for at least a year and by then he's forgotten he bought it
