He reached his zenith when he had his chat show and used to interview the likes of Jethro et al who used to reduce him to tears of laughter..Des is a very nice man who has taken a lot of ribbing in good heart and given a lot of pleasure - he also had/has a lovely voice. Remember the M & W show when they were holding one of his LPs and making fun of it and he walked on stage behind them and Ern did that wonderful double take of his and then completely back tracked? Wonderful stuff - the like of which we have not seen since. Oh, my lost youth!

yes he said that when they criticised his singing it actually helped his popularity!!

Greatnan Sat 06-Oct-12 22:18:36

He liked Eric and Ernie (who didn't!) and said their mickey-taking was actually very good publicity for him! I like him.

Morecambe and Wise used to send him up about that song. Made me laugh anyway.

Sorry Greatnan - should have put "dicka dum dum smile". Twas my little joke.

anneandgraham Sat 06-Oct-12 18:26:22

thanks Greatnan!!! he must be 80 then well he does look it, but doing extremely well to host a show, he was on for about 40 minutes interval and about another 45 minutes maybe bit longer, and he certainly had a good stock of jokes so nothing wrong with his memory!!

do know what you mean about having a child so late in life however.
as you say he will be well provided for though!!

Greatnan Sat 06-Oct-12 18:19:00

He was born in January, 1932, according to Google. So he will be 90 when the boy is 18 - hmm.....at least he will be able to provide well for him.
The woman who had IVF treatment at 58 is now 70 and admits it was a mistake as she finds it very exhausting. I found it hard enough to deal with my teenagers when I was in my 30's.

It was a very good show, but we were not that near the stage and I could not hear all his jokes, and there were a lot!!

heaven knows how the people behind me coped!

enjoyed show on the whole he did very well, it was a sell out never seen the theatre so packed!!!

Could take or leave his voice, but it was good for his age.

He had a very good orchestera and pianist!!

Yes he has an 8year old son, not sure still of his age but think over 80??!!

Greatnan Sat 06-Oct-12 15:15:42

I googled it and see it was a song of his. Do you want to make a point about it?

Greatnan Sat 06-Oct-12 14:29:09

What does that mean?

specki4eyes Sat 06-Oct-12 13:45:49

Dicka dum dum.

Greatnan Sat 06-Oct-12 09:19:32

It is odd how nobody criticises old men for becoming fathers, but most people disapprove of women over 45 becoming mothers, either naturally or by IVF. In fact, the risk of birth defects rises with the age of the father, as well as the mother.

Hope you had a good time.

Hope you enjoy yourselves, I`ve loved Des O`Connor for years, since he was a comedian, before he started making records. He`s aged a bit in the last few months, but still looks good for 80.

anneandgraham Fri 05-Oct-12 17:50:47

I used to like him on tv yonk s ago, saw him on Mr and Mrs OH recorded it and o dear he did seem to have aged.
