WHO DARED UTTER THE C WORD?

When told the reason for daylight savings time the Old Indian said, "Only the government would believe that you could cut a foot off the top of a blanket, sew it to the bottom, and have a longer blanket."

I prefer lighter mornings. I naturally sleep until it's daylight and if I have to get up in the dark it makes my SAD worse. So if the clocks don't go back I'd be in bed most of the morning.

Rosiebee I'm like you, I love the cosiness of hunkering down in winter and then really love the onset of spring.

I'm useless in the mornings, and have to leave for work at 8am. If it was pitch black at that time I guarantee I'd crash every morning!
Hate dark evenings too, but hate dark mornings even more.
At least once Christmas is out of the way you can start counting the minutes to lighter nights. Down here on the South coast, I reckon on 15 minutes per week, so by the end of January it's still light at 5, and by the end of February still light at 6, then it's only a couple of weeks until BST. Always the optimist sunshine

DH is, as I write, going round sorting all the clocks of the house out. I confess to loving all the seasons. Clocks moving hither and thither don't bother me.There's something from each season to look forward to and cherish. I'm not coming over all Pollyanna but I see positive aspects to all different times of the year. Whether the clocks move backwards or forwards, it's all part of a big cycle. Sorry, this is me after a couple of glasses of vino, feeling cosy. I just love the snuggly wrapped up comfort of Autumn and Winter and then the freshness of Spring to look forward to.

Hate putting the clocks back. It should be banned. British Summer Time sounds so much happier, we should stick to it all year!

I heard on the radio today that there are around 600 more deaths and serious injuries through changing back to GMT after the experimental trial of keeping BST.

In spite of living in the North of Scotland I would rather stick to BST all year round as I think the dark evenings are so depressing and off-putting for going out in (sorry about the grammar - good grammar is incompatible with wine). Here we have full daylight from roughly 8.45 until 3.15 on a dark mid-December day, which would be 9.45 - 4.15 under BST. Pretty horrible, but the children would get home from school in daylight and so would workers at an earlier stage in the new year. I'm sure people are more alert in the mornings and more able to cope with the morning rush hour in the dark than the evening one, but this is not the general idea here, I know.

What I don't understand is why the clocks go back at less than 2 months before the winter solstice but they don't go forward again until over 3 months after. If they went forward in February it would be more cheerful and we would enjoy lighter evenings earlier.

DH has just been round altering all our clocks - he's sure to have missed one somewhere - it's a tradition. What does everyone think about the ending of British Summer Time?

I hate the long dark nights and it feels a long haul now through winter and the dark days of November and December. At least in January the light is coming back but it really feels daunting thinking of what's to come.
