Did we know about this? Me neither, but interesting You and Yours today on Radio 4. Do any of you have personal experience of adoption - either trying to, being accepted/rejected, being adopted yourself or were any of your friends? Apparently this counttry has one of the best records for adoption of children in care but there must be many frustrated would-be adopters out there who have been rejected on grounds of age, health, race or gender.

I worked for many years as an adoptions counsellor - a job I loved. I counselled adults who had been adopted as children; recruited and prepared would-be adopters and then supported them through the adoption process and beyond. My interest in doing the job was sparked when my husband and I adopted my children from a previous marriage (yes, in those days I literally had to 'give up' my own children and then adopt them back officially, along with my husband); the social worker who was assigned to us was so crass and inept I decided I could do a better job myself.
