Is it true that you can return unused/unworn goods to John Lewis with the receipt even if you have had them for a long time? Been clearing out wardrobe today and found a cashmere sweater I bought on impulse ages ago, colour makes me look even more knackered than usual so will never wear it. In fact, it's horrible .

From their website. "It's important that returned items are in the best possible condition, so please take reasonable care of them and keep all packaging. We don't have a set time limit on returns, but if you change your mind about your purchase, it can make your return easier and quicker to administer if you bring the item back as soon as possible"

Give it a go. Nothing to lose.

Would be a credit note as you wouldn't have the receipt.

If it's cashmere I'd check it out for moth holes before you send it back, especially if it's been in a wardrobe.

Oh. You said you have got the receipt. Sorry.

They are very hot on customer service. This time last year I bought a puppet theatre and a few weeks ago, one of the wooden struts showed a crack which was gradually getting bigger, so I phoned them and they sent out a new one, asking my daughter to bin the old one! All it needed was a new piece of wood and a bit of DIY, so now the spare has been passed on to a childminder. I did say it could be repaired, but the manufacturer needed feedback so they'd be more careful, but the person I spoke to said we must have a new one. smile

I was in there once ( not strictly true, you understand!) when a chap brought back a pair of shoes he'd had and worn for six months ' but they still hurt'. He got his money back without a quibble. I love John Lewis.

frida , what's the sweater like? (I mean colour, style etc, not what condition it's in!)

When DD worked in MandS, one January an old lady took back a pair of huge bloomers for a refund - said they had been given to her as a Christmas present by her SIL - these turned out to be out to be thirty years old so must have been lurking in a drawer.
They did give a refund but displayed the garment on the wall of the staff dining room amid much hilarity.

I once too back a whole armful of white men's shirts to M and S because they were showing no wear but the interlining in the cuffs and collars had gone all wrinkly.
They tried telling me that 3 stars on the ironing bit of the care label did not mean a hot iron etc etc and then replaced the lot when I did not accept this strange argument.
By this time I was glad that I had not told them they had been sent to a real (in actual Hong Kong) Chinese laundry every week for about a year.

phoenix, it's the colour of bile and gravy, long sleeves, boat neck, tickles.

Can't picture that. Just can't.

Why did you buy it in the first place?!

Oh the things I've bought over the years on impulse and regretted. I still think of things I've nearly bought on impulse but had the sense not to buy; a strange, long poncho and a suit from a charity shop with padded shoulders [how long has it been since padded shoulders were fashionable?] in a green fabric with huge flowers on. Not to mention the clothes that didn't fit but I was going to slim into. Shoes that hurt my feet.......It's usually when I feel like I'm purchasing a bargain.
