It's not really fair, is it?

I think it's about time The Government (whoever they are) ensured that only housing in good repair can be let - e.g Certified Housing. Currently we are living in a 2 bed house as a result of being flooded out. When we arrived nothing was working: the fridge, the heating, the hot water, doors that didn't lock, filthy kitchen (they said they'd had it professionally cleaned) etc. etc. all for £500 pcm and that's cheap for this area in the NE. I remember the time of Rent Tribunals when a rent was set for each property according to its state of repair etc. The Govt. is now cutting housing benefit to the poorest in society and many people will have to live in these conditions or worse!

How can anyone be allowed to let sub-standard property? The fungus and mould in the video is appalling and I understand that it's very unhealthy to live in these sort of conditions.

As you can see from my comments it makes my blood boil when people have to live in these conditions in one of the richest societies on the planet.

We should be ensuring all people have somewhere warm, dry and safe to live at affordable prices.

These sort of conditions were very common when I was a SW - and he lack of alternative housing was the problem. The councils were overwhelmed with a backlog of repairs etc. and it really did feel like banging your head against a brick wall. I remember attempting to decorate and defungus someone's house myself and the plaster just fell off the walls as you touched it.

I still recall the back-to-back slums in Brum where people had to bring up their families. Worst of all was a single mother who was dying of cervical cancer - I visited her in her dark mould-smelling slum - she was incontinent of urine and could not afford pads - the place smelt appalling and the children were crawling around in it - unbelievable. It haunts me still - and there was so little I could do.

I cannot bear to think that this is still going on in 21st century.

That's dreadful, and I'm sure there are lots of others too. Heartbreaking stuff.

The council should be ashamed of themselves, the mould and fungus that was in that bedroom.
