Floods - anyone else had a problem?

We came within inches of the house flooding this evening (it has happened twice before) - luckily the neighbours all rallied round and dug out our watertrap (which feeds into a huge storm drain that runs under the house). The road above our house is a river.

I rang 3 neighbours who came and helped; and a local young man, who is a builder, came straight down to our house (unasked) to make sure we were OK; and he was then off to check on others in the village.

Everyone knows that OH has PD and that I am on crutches and they all rallied round in an instant.

How lucky we are to live amongst people who understand the meaning of community and who are so generous-spirited! It certainly keeps one's faith in human nature very much alive.

Just posted photo on my profile of flooding at the race course 100 metres from our house hmm

Goodness me Nanadog those floods are scary. I hope your house is safe. I feel very lucky to be unaffected. Although I live in an area of the East Midlands which used to be very badly affected by floods, we now have excellent flood defences.

Your grandchildren are absolutely beautiful.

A racecourse for seahorses.

Nanadog, is that a guineapig in one of those photos? My favourite pet animal.

Grannylin Sun 25-Nov-12 21:41:49

Lovely grandchildren nanad I used to walk across that racecourse to primary school long ago.

Nanadog Sun 25-Nov-12 22:04:33

Yes oldest GS has two Guinea Pigs Elegran very tame.
grannylin that's a co-incidence. Have you ever seen it like this before?
Hope we're safe too nightowl we're between the Avon and the Racecourse and the Avon is flooding too. More rain on the way we've just been warned.

Hope you stay safe Nanadog.

Nanadog Sun 25-Nov-12 22:11:53

Thanks number moon

Nanadog

I am really feeling for you and any other GN who may be in the same predicament at the moment.

It is just terrible, no sleep for you tonight then!.

Keep safe. moon

NfkDumpling Sun 25-Nov-12 22:42:17

Oh my word! If you're between the Avon and the race course I do hope it's on a hill. Fingers crossed you stay dry.

(what gorgeous grandchildren you have. And I like guinea pigs too, it's the way they get excited when you go near. Impossible to house train though)

annodomini Sun 25-Nov-12 22:46:24

What a horrid situation to be in nanad. I hope we hear good news of you in the morning. fingers crossed. moon

Nelliemoser Sun 25-Nov-12 22:57:29

I just hope all of you in flood hit areas are Ok. I hope for a safe and dry night for you. moon

There are two different scenarios here; the Avon flooding into the meadows and some gardens, and the Gog and Fisher Brooks which flow across the flood plain and empty into the Avon and are in full flow which means there is nowhere for the excess rainwater to go. So the ground was saturated and the race course (which is on the flood plain) turned into a lake with run off from higher ground. Luckily the drains are coping still and things are slightly better today we think.
I was once in a flood situation where water was shooting back out of the drains like fountains and the roads turned into rivers.
We're not exactly on a hill nfk but on a slight rise. I've just send MrDog and little GS on a reconnaissance mission to gauge the situation and released a dove!

As long as the chickens are all right, Nanad, that's all that matters! grin

gracesmum Mon 26-Nov-12 11:56:02

Have they come back? Or do you need to go out with a Nanabarrel under your chin to rescue them ?[umbrella] emoticon

Nanadog Mon 26-Nov-12 12:30:36

grin
Chickens have lots of room and trees they can climb. At the present they've taken refuge in the now-empty greenhouse and are having 'sand' baths in the dry soil...it must be the ONLY dry soil in Warwickshire.

Ana Mon 26-Nov-12 12:35:26

Sounds like they're having a whale of a time! grin

Nanadog Mon 26-Nov-12 12:53:03

Ouch!

Nanadog Mon 26-Nov-12 13:59:22

Just rescued a baby hedgehog, cold and wet. Wonder where it's nest mates are? Put in a box in a warm place with some food and water. Poor little thing.

nightowl Mon 26-Nov-12 14:01:07

Oh dear Nanadog. I wonder whether there is a hedgehog rescue near to you. It sounds as though it will need help to get through the winter now.

crimson Mon 26-Nov-12 14:12:56

I was wondering about all the animals affected when I drove down the road to see how high the River Trent is [it's very high and a lorry with full of sandbags pulled up behind me]. At least I can't see The Derwent on the horizon yet; when they both flood we're sandwiched between them confused.

nightowl Mon 26-Nov-12 14:17:24

I know crimson I worry about them too. I was worried when my fox didn't come for his food on Saturday night but he was back last night thank goodness. I know I shouldn't encourage him but I can't help myself. Sorry Nanadog and all those who have chickens. Hopefully he is so well fed he won't need to raid any chicken runs. blush

Nanadog Mon 26-Nov-12 14:18:35

Yes, just come off the phone to someone. Her mother is the Hedgehog Rescue Lady of Kenilworth and won't be back until later. But it seems I've done the right things so far and I can hear it scrabbling round on the newspaper so it's warming up. They are called 'hoglets ' I think she said nightowl
crimson I'm thinking its come off the flooded racecourse and what about all the poor bunny rabbits and foxes?

crimson Mon 26-Nov-12 14:21:57

I wouldn't think they have any rabbits on the racecourse. Don't know how they prevent them but it would be very dangerous having a rabbit burrow where horses are galloping at speed. It's something I've often meant to ask about. Lots of men with ferrets I guess.

nightowl Mon 26-Nov-12 14:29:39

Phew, glad to see you're ahead of me there Nanadog grin

Is it an age thing, all this worrying about animals and birds. My daughter thinks I'm completely mad when I try to share these worries with her confused

Nanadog Mon 26-Nov-12 14:48:24

Not on the racecourse proper crimson but there's a lot of 'common land* and a hill or two and then raised banks around the edges covered with brambles. That's where the bunnies live.

Hoglet is eating and drinking already. Our house has always been a repository for stray animals, my daughter used to fetch them home, then she graduated to stray humans, but that's another story hmm?
