Gransnet Grotto

Seems ages since we had a quiet corner bolt hole, so how about a new seasonal one ?smile
Just a little spot to come and visit from time to time and re-charge batteries. Nothing heavy or serious ever happens in here, it's a place for bantering and smiling.
If it's a Grotto, maybe a few twinkly lights over the entrance? Plenty of squishy sofas for relaxing. I've left a plate of mince pies on the table and a flask of hot chocolate, so help yourselves.
Does anyone have any nice scented candles?

Thanks for the slimming tip move. I'll remember that one.

Did nanadog make it home last night she sounded like she'd imbibed a bit too freely?

Jodi Sun 16-Dec-12 13:40:03

Eat up gally you deserve it. Another first, well done. Children's faces remind us of the wonder of Christmas don't they?

I've just baked my signature piece 'Kingy Cake' lots if lovely, still warm, frangipani. Goes wonderfully with a nice cup of coffee.

Gally well done you! smile Have as many crumpets as you like, you deserve them. You could root around and see if last night's crowd left anything else or whether we need to re-supply? grin

Gally Sun 16-Dec-12 13:31:24

Oooh I'm starving- a crumpet will be just lovely. I woke up late this morning (couldn't sleep) and a friend rang to ask me to go to the Nativity service with her - gave me exactly 12 minutes to get ready; I managed to shower, wash and dry hair, get dressed, eat a banana and be on the doorstep in 11 minutes. Amazing what you can achieve when pushed wink. It was worth it to see all the wee faces, so excited at the thought of Christmas. I haven't been to Church since J died so that's another break through. Yummy, can I have a 2nd crumpet please?

Movedalot Sun 16-Dec-12 13:30:35

jodi I'm enjoying the coffee with you. If you eat my crumpet there are no calories in someone else's food (well known fact) and I can eat yours, dripping with butter. Yummmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm grin

Jodi Sun 16-Dec-12 13:22:51

I love this thread too. The smell of the coffee lured me here and I'm trying hard to say 'no' to the crumpets...oh to hell with it, just one won't harm will it? How many calories if its virtual?

Notsogrand Sun 16-Dec-12 07:34:23

Early morning in the grotto and I can still hear the laughter from last night!

I've left a big pot of coffee and a dish of hot buttered crumpets on the table.....help yourselves smile

Run for it anno the squirrel police are only you! wink

Jodi Sat 15-Dec-12 22:43:56

I must protest anno if its a red squirrel you may be in contravention of conservation laws. See below.

Please use only greys.

Ana Sat 15-Dec-12 22:42:46

OK, but perhaps not this late at night.....grin

Nanadog Sat 15-Dec-12 22:40:32

anno squirrels are ideal as you can use them twice. When the tummy wears out, turn it over and use the tail.

ana no sure? Would you perhaps trial your liquor of choice and feedback?

[grin

annodomini Sat 15-Dec-12 22:18:15

OK Nanad - I've got a job for that squirrel. [vengeful emoticon]

Ana Sat 15-Dec-12 22:15:27

I don't like vodka. Will any intoxicating liquor do? [hopeful emoticon] grin

Nanadog Sat 15-Dec-12 22:08:02

Any mammal you have to hand will do anno I find hamsters a handy size wink

annodomini Sat 15-Dec-12 21:09:53

Will use this from now on. Sounds right up my street. Does it matter that I haven't got a cat? wine grin

Once again this year, I’ve had requests for my Vodka Christmas Cake recipe so here goes.
Please keep in your files as I am beginning to get tired of typing this up every year! (Made mine this morning!!!!)
1 cup sugar, 1 tsp. baking powder, 1 cup water, 1 tsp. salt , 1 cup brown sugar, Lemon juice, 4 large eggs, Nuts, 2 cups dried fruit and 1 bottle Vodka,
Sample a cup of Vodka to check quality.
Take a large bowl, check the Vodka again to be sure it is of the highest quality then Repeat.
Turn on the electric mixer.
Beat one cup of butter in a large fluffy bowl.
Add 1 teaspoon of sugar. Beat again.
At this point, it is best to make sure the Vodka is still OK.
Try another cup just in case.
Turn off the mixerer thingy.
Break 2 eegs and add to the bowl and chuck in the cup of dried fruit.
Pick the fruit up off the floor, wash it and put it in the bowl a piece at a time trying to count it.
Mix on the turner.
If the fried druit getas stuck in the beaterers, just pry it loose with a drewscriver
Sample the Vodka to test for tonsisticity.
Next, sift 2 cups of salt, or something.
Check the Vodka.
Now shit shift the lemon juice and strain your nuts.
Add one table.
Add a spoon of sugar, or somefink.
Whatever you can find.
Greash the oven.
Turn the cake tin 360 degrees and try not to fall over.
Don't forget to beat off the turner.
Finally, throw the bowl through the window.
Finish the Vodka and wipe the counter with the cat.

Sorry...decorations!!!

Notsogrand Sat 15-Dec-12 14:03:00

Popping in from 'forrin parts' ....visiting DD3 in Wiltshire. A big pre-Christmas blitz going on (a good start will be getting the Halloween decoartions down from the conservatory windows grin)

I love those little stuffed peppers gma, they're delicious!

Always glad to hear that vintage Baileys still works. So re-assuring smile
Have a great Saturday afternoon everyone!

gma Sat 15-Dec-12 13:44:30

I have left a bottle of Jim Beam on the table and a dish of those delicious tiny peppers stuffed with ricotta cheese, a dish of macadamia nuts and a bag of port and stilton crisps!!!I would rather have a tub of the stuffed peppers than a box of chocs (Santa please take note)
What would other Gransnetters rather have than the traditional pressies (i.e. slippers, smellies, chocs etc!!! I love luxury foodie treats, vouchers for the theatre or cinema, or books.smile

crimson Sat 15-Dec-12 13:06:15

Did someone mention Baileys? And, of course cherry brandy is medicinal wink.
