Gransnet Grotto

Seems ages since we had a quiet corner bolt hole, so how about a new seasonal one ?smile
Just a little spot to come and visit from time to time and re-charge batteries. Nothing heavy or serious ever happens in here, it's a place for bantering and smiling.
If it's a Grotto, maybe a few twinkly lights over the entrance? Plenty of squishy sofas for relaxing. I've left a plate of mince pies on the table and a flask of hot chocolate, so help yourselves.
Does anyone have any nice scented candles?

'Twas the night before Christmas, and in a dark house
A Granny was knitting a scarf for her spouse
She was all sad and lonely, her money was spent
For despite getting her fuel allowance and a generous public sector pension
She couldn't pay the rent
While out on the roof , with clattering hoof (OK it's poetic licence)
came the sound of a sleigh, and some reindeer at play
And soon by the fire, stood a man all in red
And Ho Ho Ho Ho! was the first thing he said
What's this now my dear, Do I spy a small tear?
Your fire is unlit, And there's nowhere to sit
No mince pies for me, Or sherry I see.
Oh no said the wife, getting the fright of her life
You see we're so poor, we sit on the floor
No turkey for us, No sprouts and no spuds
And then for our afters, we've no Christmas puds
Well that just won't do, said this chap for he knew
That her miserable spouse, was a bit of a louse
What I now can do is something for you
A hamper of food, and drink that is good
If your stocking you'll leave, by the fire this Christmas Eve
When you open your eyes, there will be a surprise!
And with that he was gone - up the chimney like lightning
And the poor woman sat down, for it all had been frightening.

Well the very next day, her wishes came true
There was food for the grandchildren and lots of toys too
And for the poor wife whose old git was just loony
By her bedside there stood.......................................
No less than GEORGE CLOONEY!!!!

Exactly like those notsogrand ...was that the late 6os?

Don't get me wrong the friendship cake is delicious but THERE ARE CONSEQUENCES !!

Notsogrand Sun 09-Dec-12 14:42:05

Jodi! grin

Sounds a bit like ginger beer 'plants'....could never get rid of them fast enough!

Jodi Sun 09-Dec-12 14:37:16

Beware the Friendship Cake!!! It multiplies and you have to keep dividing it up and giving it away to friends. When you run out of friends then you have to euthanase the homeless ones. It's a painful process and leaves you feeling bad. sad wink
I was traumatised for weeks.

flump Sat 08-Dec-12 14:59:50

The friendship cake recipe involves a sweet sourdough mix which, if making from scratch, takes 15 days before you can use it. It's called a herman and can be found on allrecipes.com/recipe/herman-sourdough-starter/
(Hope that works.)

I'll post the cake recipe on Food in the next few days. I would think it could be used as an ordinary cake recipe.

Ana Fri 07-Dec-12 17:46:20

Have we got anything savoury? I'm not a big cake eater, and I don't like ginger either! I hope it's a really big bottle of brandy though - I can see it's already proved very popular....

Movedalot Fri 07-Dec-12 17:43:10

Wow Faye you are going to be busy! It all sounds fun though. Yes, come and sit be me and I won't even steal your ginger cake as I don't like it! I'll be eating the friendship cake and drinking the brandy. It will all be warm and cosy. smile

Faye Fri 07-Dec-12 17:35:07

Can I sit next to you Movedalot and have some of your delicious ginger cake please Anno, it sounds delicious. On Wednesday I made gingerbread men with GS4 and then we decorated then. Tomorrow I'm driving to Adelaide for two weeks to visit GDs 7 and 4 where I will again be making gingerbread men I hope I am not over the limit from that ginger cake. I will probably do the same for GSs 6 and 4 in Brisbane who I will be visiting over Christmas. I also have ginger growing in the garden somewhere. smile

Movedalot Fri 07-Dec-12 16:16:33

Friendship cake is lovely, can you leave a dollop of the mixture when you next pop by Notso with the recipe please so we can all pass it along?

annodomini Fri 07-Dec-12 15:18:14

I have a 7-year-old learning to play the violin and a 10-year-old on the trombone, though I haven't heard her yet! Anything but let her sing!

Not for the fainthearted: here's some of my ginger cake made with crystallised ginger, stem ginger (with syrup). lots of fruit and half a bottle of rum. Don't drive after eating it...grin

Butty Fri 07-Dec-12 14:51:41

flump I've just taken a slice of your friendship cake with my mug of tea. Delicious. What a lovely name for a cake to share. smile

flump Fri 07-Dec-12 13:37:02

I've just popped by to leave the friendship cake for any one who wants it. It's in the tin next to movedalot's brandy. It's like a christmas cake but a bit lighter. No icing but spicy, fruity and yummy. Off to prepare for early christmas dinner with other friends. Enjoy. smile

Notsogrand Fri 07-Dec-12 13:34:23

The Lidl gingerbread houses are easy to build and look good, but if you want to eat it, put someone's else's teeth in first. They're rock hard!

Movedalot Fri 07-Dec-12 13:22:27

I was hoping to bring Lidl gingerbread house for us to all make up together as someone said they were the best you can get in the UK but they didn't have any so it looks like its just the brandy for now.sad

Notsogrand Fri 07-Dec-12 12:41:42

I've just bought a lovely selection of Christmas Cake decorations at the local bakers....at a fraction of the price being charged by supermarkets smile

Bitterly cold wind out, so nice to have a warm in here for a while.

Shoulders down emoticon smile

gracesmum Fri 07-Dec-12 12:20:08

Oh,of course sleeping grin

Ana Fri 07-Dec-12 12:01:16

Well....I can think of one or two alternatives! grin

gracesmum Fri 07-Dec-12 11:58:50

Actually, the word was shopping - whatever else did you think it could have been?gringrin

Movedalot Thu 06-Dec-12 18:13:37

grace now why hadn't I thought of that when it is so obvious. I must be slowing up! grin

Won't be joining you all tonight, off to a party of another sort!
