She's such a self-publicist ..... but love her or hate her, she's very entertaining!

This morning on Woman's Hour during a discussion on power being an aphrodisiac - this time it was women in power .... all the usual rubbish about Alan Clarke and Mitterand find Mrs Thatcher sexy.

Currie said that John Major was originally attracted to her because at the start of their affair she was in a more senior position than he (she was minister for eggs or something) confused. She went on to say that when trying to become a candidate, selection committees turned her down for being pretty so she had to tone it down a bit!

Greatnan; have you been watching the programmes about David Attenborough? I mean, how gorgeous was he when he was younger blush! Although, I've often read that, over the years he has been awful to interview, being very difficult and prickly. Sel; don't think about it it; it's not a pleasant thought sad. Many years ago there was a lady who went to my local pub and another lady mentioned how attractive men found her [she wasn't pretty at all, and I'm sure she used to sit in the pub knitting, which is a bit of a passion killer, unless one has fantasies about the French Revolution] and, since then I've often wondered what men find attractive in women. Spent a week on holiday in a hotel where we palled up with the most beautiful lady, but it was only on the last night when she appeared wearing make up that my husband noticed her beauty. My daughter and I had been in awe of her all week.

Edwina Currie exudes confidence, misplaced some may say smile I think many men find that attractive, a woman who would take the lead in matters sexual and lead them to previously unknown heights of pleasure. Or maybe I'm overthinking it...

(A bit late in the day) or "slebs", Faye. like Nancy dell- Oglio (?) thinking they can dance!

Faye Sat 08-Dec-12 10:26:07

I always thought Barbara Streisand was beautiful with her high cheekbones.

Greatnan Sat 08-Dec-12 08:53:31

Oh, yes, I would take Ian any time (or Paul Merton!) My all time favourite man has to be David Attenborough and although he was (still is) a handsome man, it is his personality that attracts me so much. Similarly, I could forgive Gregory Peck for his good looks because he was such a fine person. Sean Connery believes a man should be able to hit his wife, so his good looks count for nothing.

Jodi Sat 08-Dec-12 08:11:29

Will re-address that question to greatnan as she's up and posting...

Jodi Sat 08-Dec-12 08:10:02

So ella how about the likes of Ian Hislop. He certainly has zero in the looks department, but he has a twinkle and is a good laugh?

Greatnan Sat 08-Dec-12 08:09:34

Some of the most sexually attractive women in the world have certainly not been conventionally beautiful - I am thinking especially of Sophia Loren. Virginia Mayo had a cast in her eye and Diana had quite a big nose.
I have never been attracted to men who looked like tailor's dummies - Brad Pitt does nothing for me. Eyes, voice and smile - I could live with baldness and irregular features. No bad teeth or straggly beards, though.

Lilygran Sat 08-Dec-12 08:02:46

The young women who recently complained in the media that other women were jealous of their good looks didn't seem to have low self esteem! Living in a fantasy more likely. But I don't think beauty is essential to being attractive, is it?

Faye Fri 07-Dec-12 19:37:21

I know Greatnan, I agree. I was, probably rather badly it seems, stating that those with confidence have enough self esteem to not to have to tell people they are attractive because they don't need to, it shines through. If you have to tell others you are attractive you most probably don't have self confidence.

Ana Fri 07-Dec-12 19:34:54

Can't see that John Major had much twinkle! wink

Ella46 Fri 07-Dec-12 19:30:25

I've never liked good looking men, the ones with a twinkle and confidence and the ability to laugh you into bed are much nicer usually!
So they say! blush

Greatnan Fri 07-Dec-12 19:19:33

Faye, I was not talking about literally telling people you are attractive, but just the way you hold yourself, walk into a room, etc. I have known plenty of women (and some men) who were not conventionally good-looking but attracted plenty of attention because they had a certain aura.

Faye Fri 07-Dec-12 19:09:47

People who state how good looking they are have no self esteem. I think people with confidence don't need to tell others how attractive they are.

Ana Fri 07-Dec-12 18:56:11

Not quite the same, Faye! If you've got a certain confidence about your sexual appeal and attractiveness it can convince others - not so easy to persuade people that your tone-deaf warbling is actually tuneful! grin

Faye Fri 07-Dec-12 18:53:31

People often describe themselves as attractive when they are quite ordinary. I wonder if it is the same as terrible singers believing they have a great voice.

Greatnan Fri 07-Dec-12 18:40:58

This ties in with the invisibility thread - if you walk and talk as if you are sexually attractive people will tend to think you are.

feetlebaum Fri 07-Dec-12 18:29:01

As a chap of a certain age, I can testify to the erotic interest Ms Currie provoked in many of my acquaintance... as well...

gracesmum Fri 07-Dec-12 18:24:50

Oh dear, I thought she was being ironic - not meaning it literally!grin

Marelli Fri 07-Dec-12 17:18:38

I would have liked to have met her in a dark alley at the time of the 'salmonella fiasco'. She said there was 'salmonella in every egg'....and she spoke without fully checking her facts. Many egg producers would like to meet her in the same dark alley, I think....she lost of farmers their livelihoods as well as costing the country millions in compensation. DH worked for an egg producer, and he so nearly lost his job through her ill chosen words.

crimson Fri 07-Dec-12 16:53:24

I don't understand why there are so many women with low self esteem and yet Ms Currie has always thought she was sex on legs. Nany De watsername is another one. Edwina was my MP and we almost [literally] came to blows once. Awful woman.

Marelli Fri 07-Dec-12 16:39:41

grin - hardly Little Red Rooster is he (the Grey Man)?

Ana Fri 07-Dec-12 16:32:49

Ella! grin

Ella46 Fri 07-Dec-12 16:26:13

Did they both get laid?

Marelli Fri 07-Dec-12 16:23:47

I think the yolk's on her.....wink!
