Thanks for all the good wishes and pms. Kitty - I am about to embark on a 120 mile drive on snow and ice, so I won't be drinking at the moment, but , trust me, there will be some wine imbibed pretty soon!

Your kind thoughts warm the cockles of my heart! Once I had got my car out of the car park at the flats, the journey was not bad at all. Juragran's garden has about four feet of snow but her OH had dug out a space for my car. We watched the wonderful variety of birds that come to her bird tables and now we are sitting side by side surfing away!

Bags -well done for conquering your fear of driving on snow. . When I first moved to the Pyrenees ten years ago, I had no experience of driving in mountains but I had to learn quickly. There was only one very steep road up to my village, with lots of hair pin bends and unfenced drops and if I met a logging lorry coming towards me I had to reverse - not my best skill in ideal conditions and really scary on ice and snow! I carry chains in my car, but because I have a little 4 x 4 I have not had to use them. They are a real pain to put on, and you have to remove them as soon as you get to a cleared bit of road.
Now I just have to drive my sister up from Manchester to Coatbridge in Lanarkshire on Christmas Eve, so I hope the M6 is clear, and before that we are going over the Pennines to Yorkshire to see my grand-daughter, on the dreaded M62. I will be in a small hire car so if conditions are very bad I won't attempt to drive. Safety has to come first.
