Are you a Hobbit fan?

Loved it- it is a long film but it didn't seem like any time at all. He couldn't have done it justice in one film- or probably 2 either.
I read a 7 & 5 year old the book & then went straight on to the Lord of The Rings m,any years back & they have been avid fans ever since & now reading to their own children.
My son took his wife to be to LOR & came out saying- 'well Gollum wasn't NEARLY as scary as my Mum doing the voice!!' Praise indeed.

As far as the books are concerned, 'The Hobbit' is much more suitable for children than the rest, and much shorter.

No, not a fan. I slept through most of LOTR and I suspect I would do the same with The Hobbit. DS started reading the books when he was ten and loved the films but he always was into fantasy games at school and university and bought computer games as soon as they were developed.
I am not sure I would be comfortable with children watching the film, some of the characters are a bit scary.

I couldn't get into the books when I tried but that was several years ago. Love The Lord of the Rings films but wasn't sure about The Hobbit as the write ups were so bad. Perhaps it's best not to have read the books?

I just love Tolkien's work, real escape from the world novels.

I read them avidly in my 20s and again when the children were small. DS2 got through all of TLOTR when he was 7. Then read little more than cricket magazines - and the odd James Bond - for about the next ten years.

The books were very much part of my youth and part of 'that time' and because of that I have a very deep love for them. As if they're somehow part of me. But I doubt very much that I would want to read them now [or could read them].

I have never tried reading Tolkein, I think I would find the books hard going.

But DH, DS and I loved all the LOTR films and have seen The Hobbit and loved that too.

I am not in the least interested in Tolkein.
For which heresy I am prepared to risk being burnt at the stake!

I will probably go to see the Hobbit with GD1. I took her to all TLOTR films when she was much younger, so it seems appropriate to continue the tradition.

I'm afraid I gave up after two or three chapters of The Hobbit - I find Tolkien unreadable. I really don't go for elves and the rest...

I agree with tanith. It's not that long a book is it?

I would have thought they could have made it into a shorter film, and only one film, so as to get kids interested.

I suppose it is down to profits though.

I went to see "The Hobbit" on Saturday - I mentioned it on another thread - and oh, I loved it. It was everything I hoped it would be, so I didn't feel let down as I so often do when I see the film of the book. DGD (16) pointed out that, rather than difficult bits being cut, these bits were explained visually, and, while that added to the length of the film, it did not detract from it at all.

Are they coming out once a year, like TLOTR's? Because I hated having to wait another year for the next one...I'm very much looking forward to seeing it/them. LOTR's was magical although I always preferred the nazgul as horses and not flying creatures. And I assume Viggo isn't in The Hobbit ?

I haven't yet seen it but intend to , I did wonder if they could stretch The Hobbit into 3 films though.
