Why leave it so late??

So, we've established that NYE is a bit of a funny time emotionally and that's probably why I'm a bit peeved but -

Dh's brother and his wife (the nearest thing I have to a sister) always come to us on NYE, we have a chat with tea and cakes in the afternoon, a nice meal and a few wine in the evening and lunch out on New Year's Day before they go home. We got a phone call at 3.30 saying they were just about to leave home (in York to drive to Leicestershire!!!!) but had a puncture so would be a bit late. angry

I've been running round like a blue-tailed fly all day so we could sit down and chat at about 3.30 so why didn't they say they would be setting off later than usual.

Sorry, rant over! Not massive in the scheme of things but all the very moving posts today have left me a bit emotional - not like me at all. confused

I'd be cross and disappointed too, kitty - it seems very thoughtless of them. I hope you can recover your equilibrium and enjoy yourself when they do get to yours, though...flowers

kitty there may be a good reason for their late start that they will explain on arrival, so smile and enjoy the evening xx

My sisters in law had a habit of setting off from Kent (100 miles away)about the time they were due here so we came to expect them to be late and were moderately relaxed about it. If we needed them to be on time we would just tell them to come an hour or so earlier. One Boxing Day when they were coming to lunch while Granny was still alive, we were all sitting around in our PJs, un-showered enjoying our presents etc when youngest DD said OMG Granny is coming up the drive! Sure enough, she had clearly got them up and out on time and were our faces red! Because of their reputation for lateness we invited them to stay here before our 40th Anniversary lunch at DD's in Birmingham and travel up in convoy. Somewhere en route we lost sight of htem - then the phone rang - they had set out in tons of time, but had broken down where the M6 branches off from the M1!!

Used to have some friends in Singapore that had a habit of turning up at New Year with about one hours notice. They said they 'knew we'd always be around'. They still have a habit of popping in every 5 or so years. Half expecting them to arrive tonight. It's lovely when they do turn up. We lived in a shared house in student days so they don't mind what squalor faces them chez moi. And they know I can't cook so don't expect food.

lol merlotgran gives us time to shove stuff in cupboards, hoover, spray polish around & shine the bathroom tap so it looks as if the place is always tidy lol

Gracesmum, I just read this thread and your post made me chuckle. It's the way you tell it Dear wink. Quote: ' One Boxing Day when they were coming to lunch while Granny was still alive....' . Not realising you were going to clarify that Granny was coming with them, I expected you to say 'By the time they arrived Granny had passed away'. shock grin
