Apparently there are two large cruise ships out there with people confined to cabin with noro.

This happened a few weeks ago to a friend of mine and her OH - they had to stay in their cabin for several days.

Fingers crossed!

I've never been keen to go on a cruise (even if we could afford it) and the thought of spending all that money and either being extremely ill or confined to a cabin makes me feel I'm not missing out. Hope jeni's ship is OK.

Well, we have heard from jeni a few times, but I haven't seen anything from her for a couple of days, so fingers crossed indeed!

Personally I do think some people are going on board already infected and spreading the virus once they are aboard.

JessM Tue 01-Jan-13 17:35:19

She's on QE2 isn't she, so we would probably have heard about that.

I was only thinking this today. Can't remember which ship she was on. Mind you, if she was confined to her quarters we'd be hearing more of her, hopefully so can only hope she's having a lovely time.

I've just researched it a bit more and it is not the QE2 that is infected - there seem to be 3 other cruise ships with problems. That must be so very grim!!!

So hopefully jeni is having a great time!

She is probably still chatting up that dishy barman she met the last time she posted some people have all the luck.I bet she had a fab time last night when they celebrated New Year.

mm my brother going on Queen Victoria on 11th Jan.
do hope Jenni is ok.

Seems bit prevalent at moment, but glammanana could be right as there have been so many more cases since summer of novovirus people may be going aboard infected.

oh dear we got cruise in July!!

We went on the QM2 to New York just before Christmas and they were really strict about hand washing - you had to do the alcohol rub thing before going into any of the restaurants and the captain reminded us of the importance of frequent hand washing each day in his briefing.
No-one was taken ill while we were on the ship but after it left NYC for the Caribbean 200 people became ill.
As glamma says there is a problem with people going on board already infected.
They ask you to fill in a medical history before embarking, but you can see why people would be tempted not to tell the truth.

harrigran Tue 01-Jan-13 19:21:37

When you put several thousand people together it is inviting spread of infection. DH and I never go on ships.

Ana Tue 01-Jan-13 19:24:04

We don't either - can't afford it! grin

RINKY Tue 01-Jan-13 19:36:09

Me neither, but would love to just once. Couldn't do with all that dressing up though. Is there a line that does casual other than 18 - 30 groups?

ginny Tue 01-Jan-13 20:50:09

We went on our first cruise in November. We loved it. They were very strict about washing hands with gel when going onb oard and before eating. I would imagine the worst culprits as far as spreading illness is concerned are those who don't wash hand after using the toilet, and staff can't be in every cabin to check !
As to 'dressing up' many cruise lines only have a few formal evenings and the rest are smart casual.

harri there was plenty of fresh air on the ship, especially when it was blowing a Force 11 Gale grin
I feel a lot more vulnerable to other people's bugs in the close confines of a plane.

harrigran Wed 02-Jan-13 14:02:24

True jane, planes allow you no escape from other people's germs.
Not the reason I don't go on cruises though, DH as a naval architect believes modern ships are not as safe as they could be.

Went on a cruise once and hated it, it was a bit like here we are, One hour sightseeing, then everyone back on board. And mealtimes it was like watching people who had been starved, piling plates high, leaving most of it, just because there eyes were bigger than their bellies!

jeni Wed 02-Jan-13 16:30:58

MY SHIP IS FINE. THANKS!
Do you really think any virus would DARE attack a ship with a Gnetter aboard?grin

GeraldineGransnet (GNHQ) Wed 02-Jan-13 16:39:47

grin Hope you're having a brilliant time, jeni!

Butty Wed 02-Jan-13 16:42:16
