Decorations down and away!

For many years now we've started the New Year by taking down ALL the decorations, tree, cards etc on January 1st. The house is back to 'normal' and everything seems fresh and uncluttered. There's just a couple of Christmas bags in the corner with presents that need putting away [ours] or delivering blush. We started it after my dear old mum died shortly before Christmas. I had no heart for all the trappings and just wanted everything down as soon as was possible. I do it now to make a fresh start to the year. Does anyone leave them up until the 6th? I can't imagine now, going back to work and coming home to a house still bedecked with lights and tinsel.

I'm never sure when they have to be down by [and really worry about the consequences if I get it wrong] but I believe it's only bad luck to leave them up after the 5th/6th or whatever and ok to take them down earlier? Some decorations float around for ages afterwards and I have two slightly tipsy looking Santas that live on the piano all year round.

Meant to say Lilygran I love the idea of the Wise men creeping a little nearer each day!

I just love getting back to normal (whatever that is!) I put everything up earlier than usual because the two middle GC came for the weekend and wouldn't be here again until later this year. So - enough. Have had a good old clean up and am relaxing for a while.

DH has just realised that my birthday is approaching...will put him out of his shopping trauma and tell him to buy me a water pump or something for our Africa projects. There is nothing I need. (Well, a new knee, a facelift, to lose a stone...)

I took mine gleefully down yesterday! Couldn't wait to see the back of them. I always leave a tiny Father Christmas on the mantle 'til the 6th though - no point in tempting fate!

I took my tree out yesterday so it can have a chance to survive.

More than a couple of weeks indoors is enough to finish trees off.

I was going to leave the fairy lights up but DH insisted on taking them down.

I'm really wanting to get mine down blush, but am so superstitious that they really must stay there until the 6th. I put them up on 17th. All I have is a small Christmas tree in the front room window and the cards in the living room, but they'll have to stay there just now.

We put them up on Christmas Eve afternoon and take them down on January 6th. My church has the three kings creeping up the nave towards the crib from Christmas Eve until January 6th, Epiphany, when they finally make it.

I think I will go with your line of thinking grandimars. smile

We went to a church yesterday where they had advertised a Xmas tree festival. They had taken them all down. sad Was disappointed.

blush Sorry God! (again)

Part of me wants to be back to normal - and to dust!!! [wrings hands]

But I like the decs.

Maybe I should pray for the answer.

MY DD's birthday is 5th January so when living together as a family we never took them down until the 6th, after the event. Even though I now live alone I still leave them up then.

Ours go up in gradual stages during the week before Xmas. I'm wavering on when to take them down - as usual. hmm

Why is decision making so hard?

dorsetpennt Wed 02-Jan-13 09:18:00

Not only do people put their Xmas decorations up far too early, they then remove them before 12th Night. That's because they have been up for weeks and they are fed up with them - whereas if you put them up on Xmas Eve you only have them for 12 days. QED

I don't put a lot of stuff up, but it all comes down on Jan 1st. Love being back to normal smile

Well I love my lights and Christmassy stuff! We will take them down on Saturday and for a day or two I know the sitting room will feel a bit cheerless. I would not really mind keeping them up all year. I have always hated the dark and love the pretty glow from the fairy lights and other bits with lights.

Down and away as soon as the family left on 27th, and they didn't go up until Christmas eve! They seem pointless after the event and only to please the GCs.
I am more relaxed today because it is all over - hooray!

Ana, I think you are right. Mine will come down on Thursday. Worn out with all this jollification. Don't know how the Tudors managed it!.12 days indeed!

Ana Tue 01-Jan-13 22:56:35

number, are you sure the 6th is the right day? I used to think so, but someone pointed out to me once that the 12th day of Christmas is actually the 5th January! Wouldn't want you to have bad luck for the rest of the year...wink

Grannyeggs Tue 01-Jan-13 22:53:29

merlotgran Tue 01-Jan-13 22:16:16

Ours will come down tomorrow. I treated myself to a new vacuum cleaner today so it had better be up to the job!

Ours are left up till the 6th, hate taking them down, it`s the only time of year when our room looks bright!

nanaej Tue 01-Jan-13 21:55:34

Will take mine down tomorrow or Thursday in time for OH birthday on Friday!

Anne58 Tue 01-Jan-13 21:53:21

I wanted to take ours down today, but Mr P didn't agree! I think if I was working then they would be down, but as I am still "resting" it's a bit different. sad

glassortwo Tue 01-Jan-13 21:51:29

No they came down yesterday, needed to see the back of them.
