'Loose' and 'Lose'.

I would never correct any other member's spelling, but I have noticed that many people confuse these two words. 'Loose' is the opposite of 'tight' - the verb is 'to loosen', as in 'I had to loosen my waist band'.
'Lose' is the opposite of 'gain' or 'find', so you 'lose weight'.
I don't know why the confusion has arisen as the two words are pronounced quite differently - 'loose' rhymes with 'moose' and 'lose' rhymes with 'muse'.
I trust nobody will take offence at my pointing out this common error.

jeni how clever of you to know that. I am very proud of the fact that I have been married to himself for almost 45 years and still know nothing about football. I have worked hard on it. grin

j07 Thu 10-Jan-13 11:53:45

Quite right too! grin

Is there any other way?

Greatnan Thu 10-Jan-13 11:52:57

Jeni, that is a very 'girlie' way to choose a Football Club! smile

jeni Thu 10-Jan-13 11:47:06

Can't stand Aston's colour scheme.

Movedalot Thu 10-Jan-13 11:17:20

Jeni no idea! It was football so I tuned out. DH is Aston Villa and I know they were both moaning, does that give you a clue? They did agree before the football that Midland people have glass half empty rather than half full so that might be why they were unhappy. grin

Welcome home, jingle - where have you been?

jeni Thu 10-Jan-13 11:12:16

Albion, wolves or Walsall?

j07 Thu 10-Jan-13 11:09:36

Can't we just say CHEELU you spelt 'losing' wrong, and then shut the f--- up? smile

Movedalot Thu 10-Jan-13 11:09:27

So I found out! Then they started talking about football so I went upstairs out of the cold.

You can't insult a Black Country person more than to accuse them of being a brummyangry we ARE VERY PROUD of our heritage!

I met one yesterdy Jeni small world. We were 'builder sitting' for our son in Edgbaston and I suggested he was local, he was most put out! Very proud that he was from The Black Country. It looks like he did a good job, perhaps it was the huge mugs of tea and biscuits i fed him?

Love it grin

To be fair I read an article by a clever person who said when he was on a quiz show his brain just went to mush because of the stress (it was Mastermind I think).

My favourite was when a contestant was asked which poet wrote 'Oh I wish I'd looked after me teeth' (Pam Ayres) and the answer given was 'Wordsworth'.

Nanado Wed 09-Jan-13 18:15:49

What was that all about???? wink

Ariadne Wed 09-Jan-13 17:51:15

grin

Mishap Wed 09-Jan-13 16:56:35

A propos of nothing really except rhyming with loose - I just read a genuine question and answer from a TV quiz, which went thus:

- Q. What was Ghandi's first name?
- A. Goosie!
