Abbreviating names on Gransnet

How do you feel about having your Gransnet name abbeviated? I just realised that I do it all the time but would never do so if we were face to face unless it was clear that you were happy with it. I would never do it in an email either so why do I do in on Gransnet?

I don't like my real name being abbreviated but am quite happy with all the ways my Gransnet name has been. How odd smile

absent, nobody has ever lengthened my name except my father when he was being jocular.

j07 Sun 20-Jan-13 14:55:36

Yes. I get that now! blush

Ana Sun 20-Jan-13 14:54:04

I was talking about my real name, jingl! grin

j07 Sun 20-Jan-13 14:53:57

Oh. Your real name.

Sorry!

Must read posts more slowly!

j07 Sun 20-Jan-13 14:53:07

But yours is the shortened version Ana!

Ana Sun 20-Jan-13 14:51:40

People have never shortened my real name, because like absent's it turns into another name if you do that. I do think it's a shame that some names are inevitably shortened - the name I gave my daughter is a beautiful, three-syllable name but is always known by just the first one.

absent Sun 20-Jan-13 14:49:23

anno But don't you find that people then lengthen it? Absentdaughter was originally called Grace, which she has actually changed legally because she hates it, and I had to stamp very firmly (figuratively of course) on people addressing her as Gracie.

annodomini Sun 20-Jan-13 14:43:46

My forename is short enough already - couldn't possibly be shortened any more.

Movedalot Sun 20-Jan-13 14:42:26

Sounds as if you agree with me absent grin

absent Sun 20-Jan-13 14:30:01

I dislike having my real name abbreviated when it turns a separate name in its own right. It's not that I particularly like my name but it is my name whereas the shortened version isn't. The only one who was allowed to shorten it was my mama. Mind you, that's better than my father calling me "Doings" because he couldn't remember my name! (There were only two daughters in the family, so it wasn't that hard.)

Movedalot Sun 20-Jan-13 14:20:03

I like that thought Glam. smile

glammanana Sun 20-Jan-13 13:53:49

I always think of a shortened name as a term of endearment to someone, and always hope it is accepted in that way,I quite like being glamma and never take offence, it's far better that being called some of the names my lot call me.

yogagran Sun 20-Jan-13 13:24:24

A lot of us used the word gran or some variation of that as a suffix or prefix when GN first started - perhaps we were a little unimaginative then as there are some wonderful names now!

absent Sun 20-Jan-13 13:17:48

when You're lucky that I have never learned to throw straight.

Grannyeggs Sun 20-Jan-13 13:16:38

Don't mind eggs that was always my nickname in my family growing up. My brothers still call me that.

vampirequeen Sun 20-Jan-13 13:13:56

Vamps/VQ I don't mind.

annodomini Sun 20-Jan-13 13:12:18

anno was what everyone called me when I was annobel, so in honour of my senior citizen status, I altered it to annodomini and I'm still anno. As long as I'm identifiable that's fine by me.
I reckon it's probably another 40 years before Jess Ennis joins G'net.

Movedalot Sun 20-Jan-13 13:09:13

Whenever anyone uses that word I think of her. I have them just as good as hers but they are well hidden/covered, of yes they are......................... grin

whenim64 Sun 20-Jan-13 13:07:01

*Abs* grin (ducks to avoid the snowball!)

absent Sun 20-Jan-13 13:04:15

Especially not if Jess Ennis posted.

Movedalot Sun 20-Jan-13 13:03:44

Not even if Jess Ennis posted? grin

j07 Sun 20-Jan-13 13:02:52

grin

absent Sun 20-Jan-13 13:02:10

When I was absentgrana lots of posters shortened it to absent. That was fine and is now what I have become. However, I refuse to answer to anything that sounds like a group of muscles – so please don't do it.grin

Ana Sun 20-Jan-13 12:54:37

grin harri!

harrigran Sun 20-Jan-13 12:48:35

I don't mind at all if my name is shortened, harri is fine but har might sound like an exclamation smile
