Playing the waiting game

My daughter is due to give birth any time within the next 4 weeks, that is she is 38+1 today.

With her first I had no problem with the waiting, after all everyone knows 1st babies are late, so it was shock when her waters went at 37+5 & she eventually had him at 38 weeks.

So you can see where I'm going with this, having had her first early we were hoping that number 2 would follow suit, in fact she started getting pains last week - had a trace in hospital - they are very strong braxton hicks & she's still getting them.

I want to be supportive but don't want to crowd her - I can remember when I was having my 3 (2 were late) all I got from MiL was - "any sign yet?" I know she was excited but I felt under pressure to have the babies them & there.

Any one else felt like this?

Finally baby arrived after over 3 weeks of latent/early labour 10 days late.
we had a number of "false alarms" but midwife explained that this was because of the way the baby was lying & it was making the contractions more painful than they would normally have been & that back to back labours often have false starts.

DD is only tiny 8 stoner & gave birth to a son weighing 9lb 14oz on 13/2 after only 4 hours of established (but really painful) labour on only gas & air - I'm so proud of her, even after all the abuse we all got from her

DD was about 8 days over she had twinges for several days had a membrane sweep pm Tuesday rang me middayish Thursday. She had been advised to go in and was 3cm then.

I went about my usual U3A stuff quite unconcerned, at 5pm she rang to say my grandson had arrived at 3:30pm.
I hadn't started to worry at all by that stage, but the speed of things when she got to hospital had been a bit too fast for comfort for DD and DGS. That was with number one.

Don't bank on it Grannylin. My little grandson is still staying put! I can envisage his personality already. He'll be the one who is still in bed when everyone is stood at the door for the school run! grin

Mishap Fri 25-Jan-13 17:49:03

Still waiting! She's coming swimming tomorrow to try and ginger things up.

Grannylin Fri 25-Jan-13 17:37:28

Mishap?..........

Grannylin Fri 25-Jan-13 17:34:58

Nope...still waiting..it must this weekend surely?? Think you are going to pip me when. 24th was the last day in our sweepstake so looks like baby won!

grannyactivist Fri 25-Jan-13 16:43:21

That made me smile when. Oh you're so close now.........[excited emoticon]

With her first baby my daughter's waters broke and then she had a two week wait before being admitted for an induction; plenty of time for fake tan, exfoliation/waxing, manicure, hairstyle - honestly she looked as if she was going in for a magazine photoshoot. grin

I've been on tenterhooks for ages in view of the last, premature, birth; so not feeling at all impatient as I do want the baby to pass the 38 week mark. I'm especially happy that there will be a surprise at the end of it, I'm really glad I don't know if it's a girl or a boy they're expecting.

All 5 of mine were more or less on time, to within a day or two either way. My first arrived on the exact day! They asked me at the hospital if I was sure that she was my first baby, because I`d only been in labour for just over 4 hours.

Movedalot Fri 25-Jan-13 13:30:30

She sounds as if she is coping rather well with it all. Good for her.

whenim64 Fri 25-Jan-13 13:15:20

ga Fortunately it's a planned caesarian, as things have not progressed previously and they're not chancing it this time. The pattern of slow labour is the same as previously. She joked this morning that she will be in full makeup and hair newly styled before she goes down to the theatre on Monday, and said if it wasn't for the gallstones she would have been taking two chocolate eclairs to nibble whilst she was being sewn back up! grin

whenim64 Fri 25-Jan-13 13:09:01

Thanks, Moved and I hope you start feeling better soon - just noticed the other thread.

Movedalot Fri 25-Jan-13 13:05:17

Oh When I was told that gallstones are one of the 3 worst pains you can have and would agree as I had them 32 years ago and can still remember. Give her a hug from me.

grannyactivist Fri 25-Jan-13 13:01:17

That's a shame when - gallstones can be very painful. It's horrid for her that she's (literally) sick and tired because then labour may well be a bit of an ordeal - it can be such hard work - I do hope that she can get some real rest before the baby's born.

Grannylin.........................?

whenim64 Fri 25-Jan-13 12:22:28

It's not the regular contractions that bother her ga. She's been having them in hospital, but she keeps getting sick and has been vomiting again. They have now found gallstones in a scan, so they will try to settle her down again and say 'maybe a few more days.' Because the flareups have died down, she gets sent home again, still having mild contractions. She's very tired. Only Monday to wait for, fortunately, unless they decide she's taking up a lot of their time so might as well deliver now.

grannyactivist Fri 25-Jan-13 12:09:09

When, oh when, oh when will it happen when?
I refer to my earlier advice. grin
