My garage is at the bottom of a long and steep drive which means I haven't been able to get the car out since Thursday. Thinking this morning that perhaps a car port at the top of the drive might be useful I went onto the Local Authority website to see if it would need planning permission. Whilst the website has a fancy interactive section which is supposed to answer this sort of question, there is nothing on there relating to car ports. I looked for an email address so I could email to ask but the only way I can contact them is to fill in an "advice form" for which they charge £85. I did try to ring but could not get a reply.

So does anyone who lives in North Somerset know whether I would need planning permission for a car port? Basically just an open structure with a roof.

£85!!!! - what can they be thinking about? Just to give advice. This is quite outrageous - I am mind-boggled!

Which is your L.A, Barrow ? I'm pretty sure that you wont need planning permission, but might need Building Regulation checks.

There is no way they should be charging you £85 pounds at the early enquiry stage!

Here you go, I think this is the relevant section!

www.planningportal.gov.uk/permission/commonprojects/extensions/

If I am reading this correctly, you do NOT need planning permission for a carport.

I doubt whether you do need pp - we built a conservatory and it was no problem as it was a unaer a certain proportion of the house footprint. I just rang up and they got my house plans up on their screen and told me all was well - and it was free!!

Many thanks for the replies. I have now managed to find an email address for general enquiries so hopefully it will get passed to the planning department.

Planning departments are notoriously slow to respond! The link that I gave up there ^ is to the relevant section on the North Somerset Council website, have another read through and I'm pretty sure that you can just ago ahead, as long as it isn't the size of a football field!
