What do you sleep in?

... and don't say Chanel No 5, that's been done! What made me think about this, is SIL who always wears (granted, gorgeous) matching negligee sets with strappy nightie and sweeping gown - tripped on the latter at the top of the stairs, took a tumble and broke her foot. So she's got 'the look' right I guess but how comfortable is it to sleep in (apart from dangers of stepping on the darn thing).

Despite my best efforts and one embarrassing (when I think of it now) visit to the shop where everything is in red and black and covered in lots of lace (and purchase is still languishing in the drawer having been worn once or twice - it was just so uncomfortable, I always default to: comfy oversized T-shirt (don't like long sleeves they drive me mad; straps too twisty); must be cotton; got to reach mid-thigh - not too long or they corkscrew. Comfy knickers underneath - or not wink

What do other people sleep in?

MNine's quite difficult to turn over on. Think it's the softness. I have to sit up, and then turn. hmm

Or, it could be a getting old thing. [sigh] (me not the mattress)

Grannyknot Fri 25-Jan-13 17:36:43

It's just that she had multiple mattresses - and was so delicate she could feel the pea through all of them ... isn't that the story smile?

It used to be nothing, but over the last few years I've graduated to a cotton nightie. It has to be white, cotton and sleeveless but with wide straps. Can't be doing with skinny ones that dig into you. Oh and preferably a square neckline.
However tomorrow we are going to an 'Allo 'Allo night [under duress]. As you have to dress up, I decided to go as the Grandmother and have purchased a long sleeved cream and lilac brushed cotton nightie with a high neck. I hate to say it but it feels lovely on and when I go down to stay with my friend for a week on Sunday, I think the new nightie will be coming with me + the pink fluffy bed socks, but I'll leave the shawl and mob cap behind. Not quite ready for those yet.

Just lately my feet have been getting really cold at night so I have taken to wearing bed socks. The other night, just before getting into bed I caught sight of myself in the full length mirror and what I saw was not a pretty sight - the bed socks, the calf length fleecy cotton nighty and clutching a hot water bottle - in fact everything I used to mock in my youth! OMG - I felt quite shocked!!!! Whatever happened to the strappy, silky nighties covered in frothy with lace of yesteryear. I shall go to bed in the dark in future in case I see this dreadful vision again - it was enough to frighten the horses!!

The next thing to be sorted in this new house is the run of floor length mirrored wardrobes directly opposite my side of the bed. I avert my eyes as much as possible. Not wearing nightwear possibly makes the vision more horrific...

I feel sure that we have explored this before. Anyway, pyjamas in the winter and nighties in the summer – natural fabrics, so cotton or silk. I still have some pyjamas from the days when you had to buy them as a set instead of being able to buy tops and bottoms in different sizes. Because of my distorted body, when I am wearing these and turn over during the night, the baggy bottoms stay put where they were. Most uncomfortable.

york46 grin

Recommend full length mirror only on inside of wardrobe door.

Butty Fri 25-Jan-13 18:36:28

We have, absent. Just last winter!

Strange that the subject doesn't seem to crop up in the Summer.

flowerfriend Fri 25-Jan-13 18:40:25

It used to be a big-longish t-shirt until DH died and now it's pjs.

harrigran Fri 25-Jan-13 18:40:40

Pjs always, I am a sleepwalker.

Movedalot Fri 25-Jan-13 18:45:09

I own one pair of silk pyjamas and some pretty nighties but only wear them in hospital. One time I was in a single room so didn't wear anything and got told off by a nurse because a male nurse had checked on me during the night and was distressed!

When I stay with friends or family I take a housecoat to put on if necessary - to save them embarrassment, it doesn't bother me.

Ana Fri 25-Jan-13 18:47:14

The male nurse was distressed! grin How wonderful for your morale, Movedalot!

Tegan Fri 25-Jan-13 18:50:49

Jim jam bottoms, two t shirts and an old fleece; Newcastle united thermal hat and socks. I can never get warm these days. Oh, and used the dog to warm my feet last night smile.

flowerfriend Fri 25-Jan-13 18:51:13

congrats to movedalot.

Movedalot Fri 25-Jan-13 19:01:30

Why do you assume it was that sort of distressed Ana grin

Ana Fri 25-Jan-13 19:04:45

Oooh! Say no more, Moved! wink

merlotgran Fri 25-Jan-13 19:07:34

My lovely brushed cotton tartan pyjamas. What is it about tartan that always makes you feel warm?

Is brushed cotton the new flannelette and what happened to wincyette? My last pair of wincyette pyjamas had Noddy on them!

granjura Fri 25-Jan-13 19:20:44

Hate pyjamas with a vengeance - I have to be free smile

Thin knotted cotton nightie without sleeves and short in Summer - thicker knit, long + long sleeves in winter - usually M/S stripes.

I remember when I was 21 being in ITU and sitting, stark naked and plugged into numerous machines, on a bed pan (do they have those any more?) discussing metaphysical poetry with the male nurse in charge that night – and, strangely, neither of us being remotely embarrassed. It was quite an intense and lively discussion.

petallus Fri 25-Jan-13 19:52:18

Cotton nightdresses or tops, sometimes with pyjama trousers, long striped bedsocks. Sometimes a scarf. I recommend the latter for chilly necks.

At least no-one has mentioned wearing a hat yet (like the Victorians did).

annodomini Fri 25-Jan-13 20:00:33

Tegan mentioned wearing a hat, petallus.

Always a cotton nightie for me, knee length and short sleeved. Fluffy bed socks which seem to prevent cramp. Never fancied wearing a scarf in bed - thought it might strangle me in my sleep.

baubles Fri 25-Jan-13 20:05:48

Another naked sleeper here. Sleeping in anything feels weird and uncomfortable to me.

baubles Fri 25-Jan-13 20:07:05

And I sleep in a cold room, always with an open window!

Grannyknot Fri 25-Jan-13 20:12:20

My MIL often used to sleep with a beanie on. I didn't realise this had been discussed before, but between new members + lac of recall (mine), am enjoying this thread anyway. Can't believe how many people sleep starkers, I used to, living in the Southern Hemisphere.

Grannyknot Fri 25-Jan-13 20:12:54

Re discussed before, not the MIL and the beanie, the 'what do you sleep in'. And that should be lack not lac.
