Good news. The ladies only classes have stopped at my leisure centre.

Myself and a few other men have complained to our local leisure centre about classes which only ladies can use.
Our argument was they were not providing men only classes and if the ladies wanted ladies only classes without equivalent men only classes the ladies which use these classes should pay extra as it is a council leisure centre for everybody to use.
They have done a survey and found that none of the ladies going to these classes were bothered about men being in them.
As far as I am concerned any ladies who want ladies only classes should go to private gyms.
The membership fees are a lot higher than the local leisure centre but that is their problem.

Oh, I'm thinking, phoenix grin
The thing is, Frank says he lives in Birmingham which has a high percentage of Asians/Muslims and whenever I am there I see a lot of women in traditional dress not just the older ones. Maybe a leafy Home counties suburb might be different or a wee place like my old home town in the Borders. There must be a lot of Asian origin/Muslim council tax payers in and around Birmingham......
However, I am thinking:
terrier............................................................rabbit hole.....*LEAVE IT*!

Not sure about the lycra jO7 just think of male ballet dancers.....

I think perhaps a pair of shorts is acceptable, providing they are wearing proper close fitting underpants under them. I do agree that a combination of loose boxer shorts type underwear beneath shorts is asking for trouble!

Younger people seem ok with it. Perhaps older people should be too. Elderly gents would have wear respectable lycra though. That keeps it all in place.

Elegran Well let us hope that Ariadne isn't following this thread, then. grin

Elegran Wed 30-Jan-13 12:57:49

But, jings, mixed classes are not suitable (or acceptable) to everyone I think he lives where there are not a lot of people to whom it is not right to juggle your bum and/or tum around in mixed company.

It is like Procrustes, who had a bed which fitted everyone perfectly - so long as their feet were chopped off, or their arms and legs stretched to fit.

Who cares.
If I could get gym membership at £23.50 or even £31.00 I'd exercise alongside
Eric Pickles!

Was going to leve this thread alone but as it has been revived will post my recent thoughts on the matter. (#waitforit)

I have looked online at most gyms in my area, and several in other parts of the UK, and mixed sex classes seem to be acceptable, and in fact, the norm.

I think Frank has been right all along.

granjura Tue 29-Jan-13 21:51:42

Where is that 'groan' button on GN?

HUNTERF Tue 29-Jan-13 21:48:55

Hi gracemum

I am happy to pay council tax for facilities which everybody can use, I do not use the library for example but I am happy to pay towards that and I do not use every park in Birmingham but I could if I want.
I am only saying I should only pay for facilities I am allowed to use.

There's none so deaf as them that don't want to hear....

gracesmum Tue 29-Jan-13 21:41:33

And while we're at it can we not use any of my council taxes for any of the things I don't want to do?

granjura Tue 29-Jan-13 21:35:34

Struuuf Frank - yes we know what you mean - many of us just do not agree and ask for more tolerance. Over and out.

HUNTERF Tue 29-Jan-13 21:31:54

Hi absent

I am not saying that women are a minority group. It is people who are not content with attending mixed classes who are a minority group.
All I am saying is if ladies only classes are to run do not use any of my council tax or membership fee towards their running costs.

Frank I think you have said all there is to be said for your point of view, but please allow those of us who may have an opinion on the bigger picture of inclusivity and entitlement to express our own views.

absent Tue 29-Jan-13 21:10:25

HUNTERF When did women become a minority group?

HUNTERF Tue 29-Jan-13 21:04:21

Hi gracesmum

As I have said before I can not be expected to subserdise minority groups.
If the council wants to provide classes for women only they should charge the ones who are using these classes an extra fee.
I am paying £23.50 per month as I am over 60 and I understand the normal rate is £31.00
If they provide 1 women only class then those attending it should pay the full running costs as I don't think it is fair to charge the women extra who are happy in mixed classes.
If for example 5 women want a female only class and it costs £50 a week to run the council could say we will run the class but we will need a years class fees up front so they would have to pay £520 upfront.
It should also make sure that it does not reduce the availability of classes for men so as the centre is now fully utilised Monday to Thursday between 5.30 and 9.30 in the evening and from 5.30 till 7.30 on a Friday the ladies only classes would have to take place outside these hours.
