I've never been on the site, but I see from the Daily Mail that this social website has been shut down because of the abusive nature of posts on the forums. Saga are unable to 'police' it.

Don't let this happen to Gransnet!

Welcome, Elijay. We're always up to offering asylum to Saga refugees. smile

From what I have read they are in a billion bit of financial bother and desperately shedding any part if the company that isn't making any or enough profit. And devil take the hindmost.

Elijay Sun 10-Feb-13 18:27:39

I'm a refugee from Saga. I think there is more to the 'closing down' decision than they've let on.

Acromas Group, owners of Saga & AA, are in financial 'bother' so they made the decision to get rid of it and found it easy to blame it on the members.

Welcome Cynth and jonjon. There is a suggestion of a Midlands meet up farily soon which you both might like to come to. The BristolBrigade came by train last time smile

Marelli Sat 09-Feb-13 17:24:25

Welcome Cynth and jonjon. I hope you settle happily with us here. smile

Has Suzy any Britas strain in her? She reminds me of a bitch we had in the 70s!

Galen Sat 09-Feb-13 17:15:53

Do you think spring will ever come?

jonjon Sat 09-Feb-13 17:06:45

Hi Galen, would be nice to meet new freinds, maybe in the spring though ! XXX

Ariadne Sat 09-Feb-13 15:29:13

How awful for you, Cynth! It all sounds very sad. GN means a lot to us, so I can empathise with you. I hope you will be happy here.

Galen Sat 09-Feb-13 15:04:41

Jonjon there are several of us near you. In Barrow, Backwell, Bristol and Portishead.
Perhaps we could all meet socially some time if you're interested.
Suzie looks lovelysmileenvy

Greatnan, we are trying hard. We've written to every paper going. We've had a few good write ups in the Mail and the Telegraph online but by the time they got to their printed papers the next day, their editors had slashed it to pieces and we just got a couple of lines at the end of the article.
The reporter who had interviewed me even aplologised to me.

I have been on BBC Radio WM, Birmingham's local BBC station. They kindly gave me a ten minute slot so they got the whole story.

We are at present trying to get TV interested but unfortunately, as the story starts to die down, people are losing interest.

j08 Sat 09-Feb-13 14:43:50

I think you might be in that one Cynth.

j08 Sat 09-Feb-13 14:43:05

The Telegraph has published the forum members' views here

j08 Sat 09-Feb-13 14:39:20

Does sound like lazy moderating. Sounds like they knew for some time that multiple identies were coming from the same computer.

jonjon Sat 09-Feb-13 14:38:55

Hi jo8 my freind, reading this makes my blood boil ! How they are manipulating the press is nothing short of criminal !

Cynth Sat 09-Feb-13 14:37:59

Thanks for the welcome folks and thank you so much to Annodomini for your kind words.

j08 we are conjecturing that the reason was financial although we obviously can't guarantee that. There used to be plenty of advertising on there which slowly but surely dried up, until there was none.
Saga are owned by the Aromas group, who are preparing to sell the company.

They would not want to show that Sagazone was possibly a loss making arm of the company, and would therefore possibly need a reason to close down without it appearing financial. (I'm chosing my words carefully here for obvious reasons.!)

The members were badly betrayed.

jonjon Sat 09-Feb-13 14:34:51

Suz says thank you very much, but a sideboard can"t get you up in the early hours to roam round muddy fields , hear the owls hooting and watch the sun rise ! XXX

j08 Sat 09-Feb-13 14:34:17

here

j08 Sat 09-Feb-13 14:32:12

It's already in the press.

Greatnan Sat 09-Feb-13 14:31:16

That is a really terrible story - have anyone thought of contacting the national press and shaming Saga?

grannyactivist Sat 09-Feb-13 14:11:42

HI jonjon (and Suzie) and Cynth welcome to Gransnet.
Why not find the new members thread and tell us a bit about yourself?

jonjon, Suzie's a cutie, but as I'm more in tune with furniture than dogs may I see what a nice looking sideboard you have there! grin

j08 Sat 09-Feb-13 14:10:00

I know GN is a business as well. But there is no brand as such.

j08 Sat 09-Feb-13 14:09:13

Saga is a business. They felt there was a threat to their brand.

Surely they must have had some reason though. They wouldn't want to piss off potential customers without a good reason.

annodomini Sat 09-Feb-13 14:02:15

What a sorry tale, Cynth. I am sure you will find that you will find our GNHQ administrators more in tune with the members than the Saga ones seem to have been of late. I felt your very heartfelt grief in your post - they really rode roughshod over your feelings. ((((hugs))))
