Does anyone else find the one liners preceded by # with words running together that some posters use annoying? I believe it has its origins in twitter, but as this isn't twitter .......

...but I agree this is a very user friendly site.I 'll try to do a smile now!smile

grannyactivist Sun 17-Feb-13 23:27:21

I never log out - but all my family know my user name anyway. They all tease me a little about my GN 'habit', but in a nice sort of way. smile

merlot you would have the title of GN poet in residence if I had my way!!

j08 Sun 17-Feb-13 23:11:43

If you log out your user name goes away.

Ana Sun 17-Feb-13 22:57:16

Yes - that is a bit of a clue! I'm with you now, agapanthus. Just have to make sure you don't leave your PC on the Gransnet page - I always go back to my Home page if I'm going to be away for a while.

Crossed posts

agapanthus Sun 17-Feb-13 22:47:36

I was talking about another forum JO 8. And of course I know you have the user name adjacent to the post when it shows up . I mean the name above the message box which is always there whether you want to
post or not.

j08 Sun 17-Feb-13 22:46:49

Oh yes. It is on the bottom is n' t it. Sorry

j08 Sun 17-Feb-13 22:43:30

Are we on the same website agapanthus?

agapanthus Sun 17-Feb-13 22:43:19

When my children are here with their bf s there are 3 I pads hanging about. The other day I picked up my daughters by mistake . Personally I do care if my daughters read what I write on here. us and wouldn't have a clue !!!

agapanthus Sun 17-Feb-13 22:40:01

I'm sure I've been on one before when you wrote your username yourself when you posted....rather than it being in bold at the bottom of the page.

Nelliemoser Sun 17-Feb-13 22:29:42

I have wondered if DH has seen what I post or knows my username. I think he would recognise himself as referred to by me!

Do I care about that not much. A bit worried about other relatives though but its a long shot.

I hope!

Ana Sun 17-Feb-13 22:27:53

Well of course they do, agapanthus! That's the way these forums work - you have a user name and it's displayed when you post. How else could it be? confused

j08 Sun 17-Feb-13 22:20:23

DH wouldn't know which was my name, even if he cared.

This forum''s layout is the best I've come across.

agapanthus Sun 17-Feb-13 22:10:52

Do all forums have the user name so clearly displayed on the page of posts?I m thinking of peeps in the family reading over shoulder!!

j08 Sun 17-Feb-13 22:08:00

I don't think they would have the time or inclination to post stuff for us.

j08 Sun 17-Feb-13 22:06:06

I'm pretty sure they wouldn't'! Would be odd at the very least.

Ana Sun 17-Feb-13 21:41:53

No, I don't think they'd do that.

janeainsworth Sun 17-Feb-13 21:25:21

would ask

janeainsworth Sun 17-Feb-13 21:25:03

I know Ana.
I think if I wanted to post about a problem I had, I ask GNHQ to post it anonymously on my behalf. I don't know if they would agree to that, but that's what happens on another forum I belong to.

Ana Sun 17-Feb-13 21:19:28

janeainsworth, that's all very well if you don't want to discuss personal matters on here, but some do.

Ana Sun 17-Feb-13 21:17:44

And yes, there are circumstances and incidents that could possibly identify a member if someone was determined enough. That's one of the reasons members sometimes change their user names.

janeainsworth Sun 17-Feb-13 21:15:10

NannaAnna No you're not alone - that is my yardstick too.
Just as whenever I write a business/complaining letter the question is 'How would you feel if this was read out in court?'
grin

Ana Sun 17-Feb-13 21:15:07

You're probably not alone, NannaAnna, but some of us have posted/do post quite personal stuff, and wouldn't want it to be seen by the people involved. Surely you can appreciate that?

NannaAnna Sun 17-Feb-13 21:12:43

But that doesn't answer your question really hmm
A username does give you anonymity.
Unless you chose a username that immediately identifies you to people you know, there is no way anyone can find out who you are.

NannaAnna Sun 17-Feb-13 21:09:01

Glad you found it JessM It's amazing what wonderful (but essentially useless?) symbols you can find when you start exploring what looks like a straightforward keyboard. Endless fun grin

janeainsworth I'm one of those who's at a loss to understand worries about identities on the www. I'd be quite happy to post on forums in my own name. I find having to think up usernames a bit of a chore smile
Surely I'm not alone in saying that I've never written anything anywhere that I'd have a problem with anyone I know reading?
Or perhaps I am?
