A day at the seaside

vampirequuen what a good idea. Lovely crisp but sunny day on a beach, can't beat it!

I like Cleethorpes as well, although haven`t been for a few years. I have great memories of going once a year on a day trip as children, it was always on a Sunday, and the Salvation Army used to have a Sunshine Corner on the beach for kids, singing hymns. I wasn`t allowed on the big wheel, but slipped away a couple of times to grab a ride!

How did you get to Cleethorpes? Did you use the train that went straight to the beach? We use to go on the ferry to New Holland and then by train. Was the big day out of the year and so exciting.

Does anybody remember the song '' Sunshine Corner its so very fine''. Its for children under 99.
I can remember singing it in the cubs and scouts when we went to the seaside.

I was a cub for about 3 years but I was not a scout for very long as I discovered my future wife when I was 11.
We went to a cub / scout camp near Weston on the coach and sang sunshine corner on the way. We went to Yorkswood which is now a housing estate but generally we went by car.
I know brownies went to Weston but I had left the scouts by that time.

Vpq, we used to go by train, the station was right on the seafront, I presume it`s still open? It was the only time we ever went on a train.

The station is still there. Wasn't it exciting to not only have a train ride but to step off the train (as I remember it) straight onto the sand ?

Yes we went in August to see friends holidaying there and were amazed to walk from the station to smell hot dogs and see the sea. Our friends have since moved there as its so flat and everything central. It wouldn'd be my scene apart from a few days visit, but horses for courses as they say.

I have just realized that for younger posters this means what suits some doesn't suit everyone and apologies to all who love Cleethorpes,

As I said before, I like Cleethorpes a lot, but wouldn`t choose to spend an actual holiday there, although it`s great for days out, or a weekend away. And Pleasure Island theme park is better than some, as it`s all on the flat, no hills to walk up.

The only 'Northern' beach I've ever been to was Whitby when my father was posted at Catterick Camp and we lived in the lovely little town of Richmond. My mother refused to live in Catterick married quarters, even the officers' quarters were dreadful. I lived just outside Brighton for many years but the beach there is horrible. I live in a Dorset seaside town famed for its' 6 miles of golden sand. Not to mention the beach at Shell Bay. I sometimes feel so lucky to live here as we have the Purbecks, all of the lovely county of Dorset and the New Forest to play in.

He went to another cub / scout group about a mile away.
I am just wondering if some local cub or scout made it up as it is not on ''You tube''.
It was certainly sung on trips I went on.
The other gent is nearly 6 years older than me.
Unfortunately I am not in contact with anybody I was at scouts with and the other gent is in a similar situation.

If you Google 'Sunshine Corner, it's so very fine..' you'll see that quite a lot of people remember singing the song, Frank, and it doesn't seem to have been limited to the Scouts or Cubs.
