I have joined Gransnet for one reason only...

If any of you are MN users, you may recognize my name.

I have come over to Gransnet to drum up support for my inspired campaign. It ties neatly into Let Girls Be Girls and Let Boys and Girls Have Toys (or whatever that one is) and Let Boys Have Clothes (not sure on that name either).

It is: Let Grans Be....something! Yeah, it needs work. grin

Last week I went to Eason, a major retailer, to buy a birthday card for my mother from my 3.9 year old. All of the Grandma, Nanny, Nan etc cards had tea pots or knitting or a combination thereof!

I don't know about the Grans here on Gransnet, but my son's Grandma spent 2 weeks on African safari recently and the year before that went to the Galapagos Islands to see the turtles. She doesn't knit, I am not even sure she likes tea all that much!

So who is with me?

First we need a slogan...

Apparently my tongue and cheekness was lost on all of you.

Who knew Grans were as PO as MN has been lately. I had hoped by the time a person became a gran they'd be a bit, well, nicer and more open minded and full of humour.

Thanks for the lesson.

I really won't be back again.

absent - berate her for her lack of clarity in explaining herself. Evident by the fact the thread has a dual theme - greetings cards and stereotyping. Crazy. grin

shysal thanks for the information about e-bay never thought of doing that,I have used "moonpig" for special cards when I've not been able to find them in shops so I'll try that.thanks.glamma.

Getting back onto the subject, I buy my greetings cards on Ebay, putting in key words to narrow down the search, for example, one friend is mad on ducks, another likes hiking, and my favourite had a black and white photo of grannies doing aerobics with bloomers in view! This usually finds perfect results, although of course you need to think well in advance. I am always complimented on my choices. I also have a selection of blank cards of Moorcroft (the pottery) designs, also from Ebay, which are pretty but not over the top. I used the turtle doves one for an anniversary. I don't suppose we shall hear from the OP again, but others might be interested.

Hey greatnan hoping you are having fab time with your family, the op has obviously not met you before and your world wide travels grin she must think we all sit at home vegetating and not stamping our feet because we have not got the response we wanted maybe op is forgetting we have loads of interesting things to be doing now we are child free, never mind her time will come.grin

gracesmum Fri 22-Feb-13 08:42:36

Lilygran I love it. Hoards of slightly irritable grannies – we really don't like being patronised – invade Mumsnet and cause an unruly riot before retiring to the politer realms of Gransnet. grin

Lilygran Fri 22-Feb-13 07:41:31

Perhaps we should pursue her/him onto Mumsnet?

Greatnan Fri 22-Feb-13 05:28:09

The op seems to have retired from the fray!

Pink may stink, but it doesn't last. My 21 year old GD wouldn't give it a second look and her younger half sister went through the phase and left it a long way behind when she was about 5 or 6. Both prefer stronger colours whereas I rather like pink myself - it looks good with silver hair, so please don't tell me I shouldn't wear it.

Bags Thu 21-Feb-13 22:36:58

Sorry, scrub that last. Too tired to think straight. I thought I knew what I meant.... zzzz moon

I agree up to a point, ej, but I think there is an important difference: girls can and do play soccer and are encouraged to do other formerly 'boyish' things. It's much harder for boys to take on supposed 'girly' activities (such as dancing) without being scoffed at. Girls can be tomboys but I'm not sure boys can be whatever the equivalent would be for them. At least I think it's much harder.

Also I don't think the Pink Stinks campaign is just about the colour.

nanaej Thu 21-Feb-13 22:23:20

Whilst I deplore stereo types and did my thesis for my Early Years diploma on challenging stereotypical play I do not support the pink stinks campaign as it has no counter part e.g.Blue is poo!

Boys get stereotyped & channelled as much as girls do but this seems more acceptable. I have friends who get het up about their DGDs enjoying pink ballet and barbie dolls etc but never see their football crazy DGSs as an issue!

I think that we need to give children a range of opportunities if some girls / boys prefer pink that's OK as much as if girls/boys enjoy football.. as long as it is not a result of a single diet!

Nice one, graces !

gracesmum Thu 21-Feb-13 22:03:03

I think OP forgot to give her second reason for joining Gransnet which appears to me to be to patronise us. angry

Bags Thu 21-Feb-13 21:54:03

oops! that should be Pink Stinks

Bags Thu 21-Feb-13 21:53:36

Pink Sticks is what she needs, and she should check out Graffiti Grannys before she is snooty about knitting. They do some awesome stuff.

gracesmum Thu 21-Feb-13 21:39:50

Have just worked out CBA and I agree. Actually I don'treally like "personalised" cards Mum, Gran,,etc unless they are outstanding cards and maybe ironic. I like funny (but not excessively crude) cards, I like photographs, paintings, flowers, those old fashioned photographs with new captions etc (Have you seen the one of the man in a very 50's home knitted jumper with a caption somthing like "Rupert was hoping his mother would stop knitting for him") Those make me smile as do New Yorker and Punch cartoons. In fact I am very easy to please. And if the little DGS were to buy me a card with a knitting Nana on it I would be just as thrilled. So, tee2072 - your point is?
