World Thinking Day for Guides and Scouts. Anyone can join in though. #thinkingcanbegood

Bags Fri 22-Feb-13 18:34:22

Off to a Thinking Day Church Parade flag-bearing practice shortly. Cubs are very enthusiastic about being flag-bearers and I always have to make a choice (usually the biggest because the flag we have harks back to the days when they'd be eleven or twelve; now it's nine year olds and the thing's too big for them; Group Scout Leader won't hear of using a lighter pole #stubborn), but apparently none of the scouts who were at the scout meeting last night wants to be flag bearer for scouts. I wonder if the scout leader has solved the problem? #nothingtodowithme

The rehearsal involves me sitting around being encouraging hmm

Yes, I was a Speedwell in the guides. Thanks for jogging my memory, nanaej

nanaej Fri 22-Feb-13 16:56:30

I was a Spritely Sprite, Brave and helpful, like a Knight!!

Then in E Africa I was a Kishigi (a bird I recall)

As a guide I was in Speedwell when at boarding school and then a Rose when parents returned to UK and I went to local school.

Dad said I had to make a choice..only allowed out on either Friday (guides) or Saturday (friends & BOYS!) but not both as needed to do my homework! Guess what I chose to give up????

I was a dead loss in the Guides as well! grin

I was sixer of the Kelpies in the Brownies and rose to be PL of the Honesty patrol. Ran a Rangers group at the school in Kenya.

Galen Fri 22-Feb-13 15:41:43

I just knew you were a Rose Jing!

soop Fri 22-Feb-13 15:32:11

When in the Guides I liked to carry the flag on parade. On a windy occasion I did a good imitation of Mary Poppins...all of a flurry! I seem to recall inviting one of the village lads in to set off a small firework behind the stage. I was severely castigated. Fair enough! blush

Couldn't understand why father laughed when I became patrol leader of the bluetits, having moved from the chaffinches.

Red rose in the Guides. I remember flying up. They got hold of your leg.........

Like that mode of transport. We went on a coach and I was sick.

Gagagran Fri 22-Feb-13 14:56:52

I was an elf and when I flew up to Guides I was a thistle.

I absolutely loved going to camp with the guides. We piled all the equipment into the back of a furniture van then all climbed in and sat on top of it! Can you imagine the furore now if kids did that?

soop Fri 22-Feb-13 14:54:04

Never did get the darning badge...Brown Owl used to suck her teeth whenever I presentedher with my lumpy sock. hmm

MiceElf Fri 22-Feb-13 14:47:21

We're Woodcraft Folk!

I don't remember a hat at all at Brownies, but there is a photo of me in my uniform the day I got enrolled, complete with brown Norah Batty tights on my skinny legs!

I think I started off as an Elf and then morphed into a Pixie.

Ella46 Fri 22-Feb-13 14:29:57

I was a dead loss! hmm

j08 Fri 22-Feb-13 14:25:33

I was a fairy. And a sixer. #proud

j08 Fri 22-Feb-13 14:24:16

I started off with a woollen one. No pom pom though. Liked the berets much better. #wannabeabrownieagain

j08 Fri 22-Feb-13 14:21:47

Ana!!!!!! grin

soop Fri 22-Feb-13 13:34:18

grrrranny Fri 22-Feb-13 12:06:14

Beret? How new-fangled. I had a brown knitted had with pom-pom. And I was a Kelpie.

soop Fri 22-Feb-13 12:02:24

I looked good in my brownie outfit. The beret looked like a pancake on top of a haystack. I was a Sprite...don't ask...

soop Fri 22-Feb-13 12:00:40

baubles that made me chuckle grin

My recollection of thinking day is that we were told to think about what it meant to be a girl guide, to think about guides in other countries and what their lives were like and also to generally try to be more thoughtful about other people. We also had to wear our guide uniforms rather than our school uniforms.

How to be spotted as a bit of an oddity at school!

It's supposed to bring the worldwide organisation together. In thought. They do seem to have up-dated the subject matter since I was a Guide.
