Rory is in trouble!

Last evening, Rory went outside to sit alongside his wifelet-that-was and adult daughter [both have been spayed]. It's a ritual. They sit and stare, and once the visitors have eaten, off they go into the forest, and in comes Rory. Another black cat was spotted in the garden a couple of nights ago. Tough and youthful in appearance. We wondered was it an offspring of Rory's?

Rory was late, so I called him to come in. When he eventually reached the back door he was in one hell of a state.confused He had either been hit by a car or he had had an almighty big scrap with another cat and he was DRENCHED almost as if he'd been under water [the burn is close by]. His back leg was dragging. His nose bloody. He kept shaking his head, and we noticed that something has torn hair out from behind his ear.

Naturally, we need to get him to the vet. He refuses to be handled. We cannot get him anywhere near the cat carrier. The vet is 24 miles away. I've spoken with the vet and she is to phone me back after two. Talk about distressed...sad

And bless YOU and Mr Soop too!
You do realise that when he`s fully recovered, Rory is going to want to continue living, and eating, like a king? grin

Bless him! xx

Latest update for the loyal members of Rory's fanclub.
Rory came home in distress Sunday evening. He visited the vet on Monday and returned home later that day. He has slept for almost ALL the days and nights thereafter - ate his favourite food - drank next to nowt - hopped back and forth to his litter tray. Even though he cannot bear to put his foot to the ground, he still manages to "clean up" after himself.
I was about to collect water from a puddle last night, as per your thoughtful suggestions. A little light went on [in my head]...we are one of three properties sharing a source of natural spring water from way up on the hill. hmm...no need to source a puddle after all!
Today Mr soop bought some cooked turkey breast as a special treat for Rory. Four cans of tuna in spring water were on offer at Tesco. Rory woofed down the turkey. I drained some tuna water into a saucer...he licked the saucer dry. We then mashed the remaining tuna in our spring water. Offered him some, and he lapped it up.
Conclusion reached: ^RESULT^ grin sunshine wine cupcake

When I was cat-sitting last month I was surprised at the amount of water the cats got through, but then I looked out into the garden and there was one of them lapping up the rain water in a bowl that had been left outside. They do have mostly dry food so presumably do need water.

Because they are awkward! My old puss drinks out of the loo. Disgusting, but it's what she likes.

Squeaky Digby, will only lick a bit of jelly from the tinned food that I put down for my three. Much prefers the biscuits, and will often be seen having quite a go at the water bowl.

We have yet to find anything that he deems a "treat". Maurice will do almost anything for a bit of cheese (stilton being his favourite) and is always marked present when bacon is being de-rinded. In the last fortnight, Maurice has also shown a liking for chocolate. (yes, I know it is very bad for cats, but when my previously well mannered chap practically climbed up me, I gave him a tiny bit of the Twirl bar I was eating, in the hope that he would realise that it wasn't anything he would like, how wrong I was! He has now shown a distinct preference for Toblerone)

However, I had hard boiled some eggs ready to make sandwiches for our trip yesterday, and had left them in cold water on the work top. Digby was discovered lapping away at the water with great gusto. Does anyone have any idea why he might find that so desirable? After all, the eggs had been rinsed quite a few times, and were just being left to cool in the last lot of water.

None of my cats have ever drunk water that I have provided, but I have seen them drink out of puddles. I haven`t seen Mia at a puddle, and she doesn`t drink what I give her, but she has food with jelly, so is getting water in one form at least.

Marelli Thu 14-Mar-13 19:02:19

I was concerned that Daisy hadn't been drinking when I'd had to take her to the vet a couple of months ago,*soop*. She'd been fighting as well. The vet had given her the long-term antibiotic injection and suggested giving her wet food as well as her usual Iams or Purina dry food. She said that cats can exist on such a little amount of water that they could almost be desert animals! She's ok now and is drinking out of her dish as she was doing before, but we always leave a dish of water in the garden too. This has rainwater in, as does the wee pond thing at the bottom of the garden.

Reach the bum!

Galen Thu 14-Mar-13 18:53:43

I read that as tech the bumhmm

soop Thu 14-Mar-13 18:26:55

It isn't possible for me to reach the burn...but I shall go seek a puddle. grin moon

Galen Thu 14-Mar-13 18:25:34

Next door liked my garden pond (but ran off when a frog jumped next to him! Big sissy)

Our chickens always preferred puddle water too, and the more moss and dead leaf gunk in it the better. We stopped putting clean water out for them eventually.

annodomini Thu 14-Mar-13 18:18:53

Tap water has additives of which cats are suspicious. How about that burn that he was thrown fell into? My late cats used to prefer puddles to the clean water I left out for them.

soop Thu 14-Mar-13 18:09:18

Thank you, Butty your suggestion is well worth a try. x

Butty Thu 14-Mar-13 17:58:30

soop We had a cat which didn't seem to drink, until we saw him drinking from the an old little puddle of water outside. As he is 'from the wild', try giving him a little rain water which he might prefer.

soop Thu 14-Mar-13 16:58:27

The vet hopes that slow release antibiotics should help him to recover. He is sleeping soundly and shows no inclination to wander outside, thank goodness. The problem is, he isn't drinking his water. I googled 'cats that refuse to drink'. One suggestion - to give him the liquid in which tuna is canned. Off to Tesco tomorrow to get a supply. hmm

numberplease Thu 14-Mar-13 16:21:34

He`s like any man, likes being pampered!

Marelli Thu 14-Mar-13 16:19:18

He's been a lucky boy, in more ways than one, soop. Hopefully when he's fully recovered, he'll be more wary of wandering into dodgy territory. Does he need to see the vet again?

Butty Thu 14-Mar-13 15:42:46

Glad Rory is on the mend soopsmile. Sleep is good medicine and as he's eating your chopped chicken delicacies and purrrring, he's probably enjoying his convalescence. grin

Ana Thu 14-Mar-13 14:43:22

What a trooper! smile

soop Thu 14-Mar-13 13:55:54

Rory is still sleeping. He is eating, which is a good sign. He cannot rest the injured foot on the floor. The paw appears to very swollen. He hops from his cushion to his litter tray...and then he returns to continue with his recuperation. He enjoys being petted and rewards us with loud purrs. smile
