"Reclaim the Night" is claiming the right of women to go out alone without being raped. Some of us come home from work or church activities or all sorts of things after dark.

The march was rather pointedly through a Pakistani neighbourhood.

Agree with you MiceElf, at least you feel you have done something and not just sat back and moaned which I always point out to people who scoff.

I've lost count of the marches and and demos I've been on. I started with CND and was in Grosvenor Square, moved on to Greenham, lots and lots more including of course the don't attack Iraq, and the most recent has been a campaign about the closure of a local hospital. Has it done any good or achieved anything? I've no idea, but it did, and does make me feel better!

P is for People! I must remember that - in case they try closing any of our public toilets here!!

I went on marches as a student and more recently took part in P is for People protest outside the Welsh Assembly - protesting against toilet closures. Great fun. Just one policeman to keep an eye on us older people. We made the news and enjoyed chanting the slogan as encouraged by the TV people!!!

I went on two of the anti-war marches against Blair and Bush with people from all over the county marching under their various banners of different organisation or on their own. It was a wonderful atmosphere and heart breaking that we were just ignored by the warmongers, specially now we see the outcome.

Well done for you Mary it sounds as though you have found something that is really worthwhile and that you are enjoying life.

It's fun, isn't it? I had my first protest march in my 50s, marching against a racist MP. Most of the others were young and were really interesting people. So many came from rural backgrounds or old fashioned families where racism was endemic in their parents' generation, but they had risen above this themselves.

As for me, my own parents, born 1910 and 1908 were never racist (or homophobic or sexist for that matter) so it has always been easy for me to see through prejudice and reject it.

I was, and still am, very proud of my fellow protesters.

We succeeded in preventing the racist from ever getting elected again.

Good for you - it's never too late MaryXYX! grin

Glad that you are out and on the march!

Was this about light pollution, or about trouble on the streets after dark? - or neither?

It may be a little late in life to make a start, but last Friday I went on my first protest march. It was "Reclaim the Night" and we made up for a slight shortage of numbers by making a raucous noise.

I do feel so much more at home with that sort of group than the really old people in the flats where I live!
