Seems like Meghalaya is a good place to live if you're a woman in India.

I had to laugh at "Men are not even entitled to take part in family gatherings ..... all he [a husband] can do is play the guitar, sing, take to drink and die young." It occurred to me that some husbands might be quite happy with this scenario (apart from the dying young bit).

More seriously, it demonstrates that although most societies are male dominated, there are examples that go against the "natural" explanation for male dominance. Not that I'm particularly a fan of this either - it's still a form of discrimination, albeit one that [very] slightly redresses the balance.
