Simple pleasures!

I'm sure we've had this before, but here goes again:
After a long wet and cold winter how nice to be able to dry sheets etc on the line (whirly thing) watch them getting a good blow and then ironing them 'straight from the line'.

Sometimes we struggle too hard for the big things and forget that life can be full of lots of simple pleasures; and they all add up.

Its great that so many of us agree about something-'Blowing in the Wind' When I moved to this house 5 yrs ago it gave me such pleasure to be able to hang washing outside on the line after 7 years in a flat where we were not allowed to even drape washing over the window-sill !!

I see plenty of bedding hung out windows here, sometimes even when it is raining! I love hanging out for my daughter in New Zealand and it dries in an hour.
My life is full of simple pleasures, most of which cost nothing. I like putting a hot water bottle under my duvet and then snuggling down holding the bottle. It is so effective, I never need to turn on my radiator.
I am looking forward to finding the first primroses and wild crocuses in the forests but it won't be a while yet, as it is now snowing hard enough to block my TV signal.
Getting pms from my grandchildren and my grand-daughter-in-law always brightens my day and often there are photos of my great-gds.
I really enjoy driving, although obviously that costs money, but I don't need to go very far to visit lovely towns like Annecy and Evian-les-Bains.
In summer, I swim in a lake surrounded by towering mountains.

Chatting on Gransnet and a couple of other sites is always enjoyable even when I get embroiled in heated debates.

And, of course, my favourite activity is free - walking in the mountains.

Who are you Chris1111? Why have you pm'd me? I haven't opened the message because there was no message and you got my name wrong.
Dodgy.

Oldgreymare.

I love the smell and feel of outside dried washing.

Pity my neighbours though. When my knickers are hung out, Pilots think they are a windsock for E Mids Airport. grin

You can add me to the list of fans of line dried washing. I have the added bonus of the first time I do it each spring cleaning the line and finding the cloth is clean. When we lived about a mile inside the M25 the line had to be cleaned several times a year. It makes me realise that the air I am breathing must be so much cleaner. Just in case you hadn't already heard, I love it here! [smile[

The Austrians used to like the smell of wind-blown bedding so much, that every day when they made the bed, they either hung the sheets out of the window, or draped them on a chair by the open window, for half an hour in winter, or an hour in summer. That was when I was an 'au pair; back in the mid 1960s. I wonder if they still do that?

I also love the smell of washing dried outside but I hate the pressure to bring it in as opposed to being able to leave it where it is when it's been dried inside.

My small pleasure is lying in bed listening to pounding rain on the velux window above my head.

Something never seen these days, a line full of glowing white nappies. I used to be so proud of mine. I also love the smell of line dried linen.

A walk by the sea

Sound of the sea crashing on the pebbles at Walberswick when I am lying in my bed in the beach hut.

Agree lovely smell from clean linen dried in sun and wind!
We had lovely lunch with old friends and ood was very good!
That's my simple pleasures! And our friend Sid how nice my hair looked! Worth spending 3 hours at hair dresser thurs!

Your walk this morning sounded right wonderful, when. smile

Galen my DH would sympathise with you. Hope it doesn't last too long and you feel better soon.

Today, mine was walking alongside the field early this morning, just as the horses and ponies were being turned out from their stables. It was very sunny but fresh, and a fine mist hovered over the grass, hiding the horses' hooves. A beautiful sight sunshine

annodomini Sun 07-Apr-13 21:24:30

I too love the smell of line-dried linen. However, anyone with pollen allergies should be wary because pollen grains could have settled on the sheets and pillowcases.

Galen Sun 07-Apr-13 21:11:27

Hung mine inside as too cold outside for me! Also flare up of arthritis, can hardly weightbear on r foot!

LullyDully Sun 07-Apr-13 21:09:13

We must have all been washing today and hanging clothes on the line!! Remember when i was little being called 'The peg lady' by my granny as I helped her by handing her the pegs. i felt very proud.

It has been so lovely here that I have washed and washed, loving the fresh clean smell. Even Theseus' cycling kit has been washed and is ready when he is. How can one man need seven cycling vests, four pairs of shorts and goodness knows how many track suit tops? "But I've had that since...."

Getting the kit washed, and the Paris - Roubaix race has always signalled spring to me. But T has yet to get on a bike this year, what with the hip and everything.

Grannylin Sun 07-Apr-13 20:57:09

Oh yes merlot and seeing the first swallow arrive....will they ever come this year? confused

merlotgran Sun 07-Apr-13 20:53:56

The sound of the first cuckoo always reduces me to tears. I'm usually hanging the washing out when I hear it. grin

Deedaa Sun 07-Apr-13 20:45:02

Oddly, I've always loved the distant sound of a plane in a still blue summer sky. Ever since I was little something about it has meant summer to me.

merlotgran Sun 07-Apr-13 20:43:58

Same here. The sheets will still have that lovely fresh smell when we go to bed tonight. My other guilty simple pleasure today was gin o'clock on the patio watching the hens scratching over a border I had just dug. They will soon be confined to a large run for the summer so they'd better make the most of it.

Ella46 Sun 07-Apr-13 20:39:36

My bedding was hung on the lines today for the first time this year, and it smelt just like spring smile

Nelliemoser Sun 07-Apr-13 20:31:34

I am another line dried washing fan. I have always sniffed line dried washing, its a very strange habit when you think about it. I wonder what makes it smell so clean. You don't get that if its hung up indoors.
