Mumsnet

I occasionally used to go on a Munsnet thread for book recommendations, On the back of that I went out and bought The Poisonwood Bible and Middlesex which several members had said were fantastic books and they were right two great reads.

I ventured on Mumsnet a little while ago and was reading one thread, I think entitled something like "what things really wind you up". Someone said something along the lines of "f...... pensioners who clutter up the high street and go shopping on Saturdays when they have had all week to do it!" There have been times when I've seen some comments and thought, "blimey they really don't care what they say or how they say it!"

I sometimes visit Mumsnet. They seem to me to be a lively, articulate, bunch, supportive of others who are distressed about something and rarely vindictive although they do like to call a spade a f*ck**g shovel sometimes.

Go and have a look at their Thatcher thread. There are loads of posts about not speaking ill of the dead and RIPs. However, it is obvious that many of those posting, especially those criticising those criticising Thatcher, are too young to know much about her and the effects her policies have had and continue to have on this country. The majority are going out of their way to be nice but I expect Jeremy Vine has dropped his Munmsnet debate in the light of the news. Ironic really.

My only foray into the Mumsnet world was so juvenile I have not returned. It was like trying to talk to a bunch of over-excited early teens!

I am sure that there are many bright, intelligent and emotionally literate mumsnetters..but I did not meet them!

I would look at it more often but there are only so many hours I can spend online - it sounds fun.

Mumsnet has 600,000 members so obviously it is not so nasty that it has become unpopular. Should be a short discussion.

Well, that was more about full-time working mums v stay- at-home mums.
