Pogs agree 100% I bet my son's would like to be able to afford the price of a ticket to a match by the time they save for it the fixture has been and gone,but then they would be at work anyway so thats them out of the picture.

Laughing the other way round a man I know was very astonished when the police came to tell him his son had been arrested for violence at a football match.

The problem was:

1) The son was not interested in football.

2) The son was out the back of the house and he was half way through mowing the lawn.

Newcastle United normally has a very good behaviour record and given that their ground is slap bang in the city centre the impact on the city during match days is normally quite positive.

I honestly do not think that these thugs were genuine fans and our local papers are suggesting that many of them did not actually attend the game at all. I hope the law comes down on them like a ton of bricks.

My DH, DS and I are season ticket holders at NUFC - and have been so for twenty years. I have rarely seen any trouble and generally the crowd is very good natured. On Sunday we went earlier than usual as, for a change, DH and DS fancied going for a drink before the match. NUFC had very kindly allocated me a disabled parking space and when we arrived at the ground there were vast numbers of police there, partly dressed in riot gear. I decided to stay in the car while the men went for a drink and then made my way past all the police to my entrance gate. As I walked past the police were lovely, asking me if I was ok, was there anything I needed, etc. The particular entry I use was blocked off by police vans, but they quickly helped me round and we had a few jokes together.

After the match we made out way back to the car park and, as usual, were delayed leaving whilst the fans left. We were then waved out before the Sunderland fans left and were amazed to see the number of police out on the main road, and how many roads were blocked off. Our journey home was straight forward as usual. At ten o'clock that evening we put on the News and were staggered to see all the trouble in the city centre.

Locally everyone is convinced that the people who acted so disgracefully probably hadn't even been to watch the match, but had sat in the city centre pubs for several hours, just drinking. Certainly the people I saw on the news didn't generally look like the people who I usually see at the match.

This morning when I went to church I discussed this with several people, saying that as an adopted Geordie I was embarrassed and appalled by the behaviour of these people and the view it gave of this region. I am immensely proud to live here - the people are lovely and incidents like this just perpetuate the myths that people living in other regions like to have of the North East.

I am afraid there are stupid nasty people everywhere and always those who will jump on bandwagons.

My dad is also a season ticket holder GillieB and has been since "forever". He said almost exactly the same as you. He was home safe and sound (chatted to a couple of WPC's on the Metro) and it wasn't until he put the news on the TV later he saw what had gone on after he left. As I said earlier these were not Newcastle fans at all they were thugs looking for a fight.

POGS I know very little about football although all my 'boys' are keen but your post made me think about the police who tried to frame Andrew Mitchell despite the CCTV and also despite him having recorded a meeting with his local Police Federation. It does rather worry me that some of our police are, as you say about people, so stupid. If they are not clever enough to make a good job of framing someone I am rather worried.

Can I just say I mentioned Newcastle because that is where he was from and I used his case as a point in question. I didn't intend to make the town the issue, sorry.

GillieB and gillybob maybe we should all take less notice of 'The News' I certainly see this in London. Sad when people are demonised because of people with no skin in the game but a skin full are taken as the norm.

My granson is also a season ticket holder and was home save thank god but some people go out just to see what trouble they can cause .mind sunderland beating us didn't help [thats a joke ]

Pogs, I certainly wasn't getting at you with my comment about people jumping on the bandwaggon - quite the contrary. I was actually thinking about how a few simple minded souls start causing trouble and how it escalates so easily. As you can tell I am very protective of my adopted home - having lived in the Midlands, Essex and Berkshire I can tell you that there is nowhere like it and the people are so lovely. I felt deeply hurt by the slurs in the media.

I can honestly say that scenes such as those recently shown in the media are extremely rare in Newcastle and in fact I am struggling to remember any thing similar. I think we should treat it for what it was which was brainless thuggery and not allow the good name of our football club to be brought into disrepute by a bunch of idiots.

I was being a bit pre-cautionary as I didn't want the thread to deteriorate into being about football and geograpical areas in a bad way. Up the Magpies.

I know the papers are reporting about yellow lines being put on a 1.4 metre wide path wall to wall.
The most stupidest thing I was involved in was a BT engineer fitting a phone plug in box 9 inches in front of a door.
This was closely followed by a painter being instructed to paint a shelf.
The foreman never told him to take the phone off the shelf and the painter did a beautiful job painting around it.

My son was at the match on Sunday he said as they came out of the ground and cut through the Town to get home it was obvious certain groups were looking for trouble, he also said that the groups didnt appear to have been in the ground, but in the bars, so they made a quick get away before things escalated.
I have been St James many times and have never felt uncomfortable within the crowd, or if shopping in Town when the game is over and the crowd spill out of St James.
These thugs were not fans they just were looking for any opportunity to stir things up.
Yes there is rivallry between Newcastle and Sunderland, and a Derby brings things to a head, but I would say that on the whole its just good banter.
