With a long career in education and now with two grandchildren to love and worry about, I feel passionately that we all need a say in what is happening to education at the moment. I was inspired to see Debra Kidd talk on Channel 4 about the current proposed changes which will impact on our little ones and their teachers. She has written about it here:

I hope that some of you will feel strongly enough to add your names to the petition. Don't worry about the box asking for your education title. Just put 'Grandparent' in there.
We all need to be heard so that our children have the chance to be creative, happy and confident.

Pedagogy: the method and practice of teaching, especially as an academic subject or theoretical concept.
Exposition: setting forth of the meaning or purpose.
Yes I know what it means nonu.

Well I am trying Greatnan. I would really like to find out why people think rote learning and strict chronology is the right way to teach young children history and exactly how they would go about it with a mixed ability class. I think people often focus on teaching without thinking about how children learn. I have just spent a week visiting historical sites with two of my grandchildren. The seven year old is an able child who could tell you masses about the Romans. I don't think she could place them on a timeline with absolute accuracy at the moment, but she will have a huge amount of understanding of the way they lived when she does develop a more sophisticated chronology.

Isn't the arguement about school holidays that children whose parents use the holidays to spend time with them doing interesting/educational/fun things have an advantage over children whose parents just stick them in front of a telly for 6 weeks and therefore the children with the advantage [and their parents] should lose that precious time with them. Or so I've heard.

j08!!!! zero! hmm

It is a ridiculous analogy because teaching will never be an exact science like medicine has to be.

I'll shut up now and let these superior brains have the thread back.

absent Fri 19-Apr-13 19:45:35

Fat chance!

Greatnan Fri 19-Apr-13 19:42:50

Wouldn't it be nice if we could have a serious discussion about such an important subject?

Mamie Fri 19-Apr-13 19:42:50

Why is it ridiculous jO8/9? Genuine question.

j08 Fri 19-Apr-13 19:39:35

And that is a ridiculous analogy btw Mamie.

j08 Fri 19-Apr-13 19:38:20

I can't remember what the flippin' number is! It's all that Bags'! fault. She said "just have a number". hmm

The fact remains whether it's j09 or j08, it sure as hell aint JO!

grin

Nonu Fri 19-Apr-13 19:22:50

What on earth does exposition of the pedagogy mean ??

Suppose i could look it up , can"t be bothered .

This is sooooooooooo amusing .

Mamie Fri 19-Apr-13 19:19:56

I look forward to you telling our retired doctor that you know more than she does because you have been unwell.
#bit hard to knowyouarejo9whenyoupostasjo8

annodomini Fri 19-Apr-13 19:17:57

J09?? since when?

j08 Fri 19-Apr-13 19:14:15

I can remember some truly awful teachers who I came in contact with while my kids were still at primary school.

j08 Fri 19-Apr-13 19:13:15

And even then I wouldn't.

j08 Fri 19-Apr-13 19:13:02

And I would need to know about your succes or otherwise in the classroom before I conceded you were any more qualified than me to have views on education.

j08 Fri 19-Apr-13 19:11:35

And my name's not flippin' JO. j09 - j zero 9! It's not difficult!

j08 Fri 19-Apr-13 19:10:20

Oh for flip's sake! Are we not allowed to post on a thread entitled Education unless we have been a teacher in the past? hmm

#trystoppingme

Mamie Fri 19-Apr-13 19:07:15

Yes JO of course. I have also understood lots from my children (primary schools, grammar schools, universities, post-graduate) and my grandchildren (primary schools in England and Spain). Useful and interesting, but nothing compared with thirty-five years in the classroom in terms of what I know and understand about how children of all abilities learn. Sorry, but I do think experience matters. Sadly Michael Gove doesn't.

j08 Fri 19-Apr-13 18:52:40

And perhaps I will mention that both my daughters are teachers. (Son was too, but found he disliked kids) #whydidntheknowbefore???

j08 Fri 19-Apr-13 18:50:32

Perhaps my assertions come from the bringing up of three children who attended a comprehensive school, a grammer school, and a European School.

And then there are my grandsons, of course, currently attending a different kind of school again. smile

Greatnan Fri 19-Apr-13 18:22:54

Apparently, there are still people who believe that teachers work a five hour day. Of course, there are still people who believe the earth is flat.

Mamie Fri 19-Apr-13 18:20:46

Well you were making some very strong assertions about how children learn JO. I was just interested in your evidence base.

j08 Fri 19-Apr-13 18:20:29

I don't want them to shorten my grandsons' summer holidays.

Remember the bliss of the first day of the six weeks? smile

Mamie Fri 19-Apr-13 18:19:32

Am always fascinated by people who think learning by rote is the answer to everything. Is that how they learnt to drive?
