I've started a new thread so as not to be accused of deviation on the measles thread
I love a good prawn cocktail and am now going to make myself a low fat version one.
jingle I think that link looked super. I think I will modify that recipe.
Has anybody got any other interesting variations?

Go to Lidl for the prawns. A box of between 24 and 28 large king prawns £2.49! They are big, juicy and delicious. I use them for a Thai prawn curry and they stay really sort of "meaty" and don't disintegrate like the smaller ones.

I've also used them in prawn cocktail, lush!

merlot, I have to ask - why on earth would the prawns be on top of the wardrobe? confused Or in your handbag, come to that.....grin

I fancied a prawn cocktail the other evening but couldn't find the prawns in the freezer. I checked my handbag and the top of the wardrobe then noticed DH was looking guiltier than the Jack Russells when they've been playing 'Pass the Parcel' with a cauliflower. He had to admit he'd used them for fishing bait. Carp and perch, apparently, love them!! Bloody Hell!! Fish have expensive tastes these days. Whatever happened to worms?? shock

Galen That's the trouble with living in the south. Bury in Lancs is supposed to be one of the best producers. They will deliver to your door even in Somerset or Avon or wherever Portishead is these days.

Can't get a decent black pudding round here! Love coquille ST Jaques!

Nelliemoser Sat 20-Apr-13 16:33:08

Are you all going to go totally 1970s cliche and have Black Forest Gateau for dessert? grin

Since I became a veggie I gave up prawn cocktail starters for Pear, walnut and Stilton salad on a few rocket leaves A cliche of a different decade really. Now it seems to be scallops and black pudding. Enjoy it whatever .

I think I'd use chopped chives rather than garlic, though your version does sound tempting, Galen. Not today though as it is a fast day for me.

Ana Sat 20-Apr-13 16:02:50

Yes - it gives them a very attractive rosy hue! grin

Galen Sat 20-Apr-13 15:45:48

That's why I'm having aioli garlic flavouredsmile do overwhelmed prawns blush?confused

Ana Sat 20-Apr-13 15:44:24

Creme fraiche sounds an interesting variation - might give that a go!

Nonu Sat 20-Apr-13 15:00:39

You set me thinking now Ella .

Ella46 Sat 20-Apr-13 14:58:59

How about using a garlic mayo and if it was too much you could soften it with plain mayo smile
I love these happy threads especially about food grin
wink

Riverwalk Sat 20-Apr-13 14:55:29

Butty grin

My own take is using fat-free creme fraiche, squirt of tomato puree, sprinkling of sumac or paprika and a bit of chopped coriander .... tasty and almost calorie-free.

Nonu Sat 20-Apr-13 14:51:53

I know it is easy , but i am thinking lazy might be my middle name these days .

Isn"t it good to have a cheerful thread , not too much heaviness .

[smiles]to one and all

Riverwalk Sat 20-Apr-13 14:45:46

I'm sure it is easy ...... to overwhelm a prawn.

Galen Sat 20-Apr-13 14:44:36

But it's so easy!

Butty Sat 20-Apr-13 14:44:02

Bring the overwhelmed prawn around with just a dash of tebasco.

Nonu Sat 20-Apr-13 14:42:46

I don"t make Marie Rose sauce , too lazy , I just squirt the mayo over them .

smile

Galen Sat 20-Apr-13 14:41:16

I'm trying to imagine an overwhelmed prawn?

Riverwalk Sat 20-Apr-13 14:34:49

Nonu if the prawns aren't overpowered by a big dollop of marie rose sauce, a bit of chopped garlic won't bother them! grin

Galen Sat 20-Apr-13 14:28:54

174 cals. Not a fast day today so I think I can have that.
The whole meal comes to 488 cals.

Nonu Sat 20-Apr-13 14:24:47

I don"t think I have ever dried it with garlic , I would afraid of over powering prawns .

It does sound good though could give it a whirl , don"t know till youv"e tried.

Incidentally the Prawn cocktail I had last night was delic.

smile

I like the sound of garlic and lemon juice. I was wondering about using aioli can't be two many calories in a tablespoonful.
Must check on pal!

Ceesnan Sat 20-Apr-13 14:19:48

I put a little chopped garlic into the mayo.

Galen Sat 20-Apr-13 13:49:24

I've made a herby couscous with parsley coriander mint wild garlic and lots of lemon juice. I'm going to have mine with that.
I don't think it will be high in calories? I hope!smile
