On Saturday I received a phone call from my Taiwanese son to say that he was visiting an Expo in Germany and would be making a brief detour to visit me on his way home. He arrived very late last night and booked into a local hotel in order not to create any work for me whilst I'm ill. He spent the morning with me and then my daughter drove him to the train station for a train that left just after 2pm. It was such a lovely surprise - and when I think of the costs in terms of his finances and the time spent on extra travel I feel really humbled and thrilled that he went to so much trouble just to see me for a few hours.
Anyone else had a nice/nasty surprise recently?

That was lovely GA.
I had a lovely surprise yesterday when a friend asked me to go on holiday to her house in Portugal in May for two weeks. It took me about a nano second to say yes. It's just what I need - something to look forward to.

Gally that is a lovely surprise, are you going with your friend? sunshine
I'm in almost the opposite situation: I've accepted an invitation to join my in laws at a cottage in Cornwall for a week (this Friday), but as I'm still coughing badly during the night I'm afraid I'm going to have to cancel. sad It just wouldn't be fair to spoil their holiday.

I was supposed to have a new fence erected at the bottom of the garden last Friday. When eventually the workmen turned up, the fence panels were still dripping wet and I said I didn't want it installing until they were dry, as the creosote would run down onto the concrete bases and also kill off the existing plants. I sent them away with a bit of a flea in their ear and asked them to get their boss to ring me, which he failed to do. I was out for most of yesterday and was steeling myself to ring the company this morning after I had tidied the kitchen. Taking out the rubbish, I bumped into my neighbour who asked me if I was pleased with the new fence. As I looked a bit bewildered he pointed down the garden and lo and behold the new fence in situ! Obviously they had done the job yesterday and I hadn't noticed. They did a brilliant job and even resited my washing line. I went hot and cold at the thoughts of me phoning up to complain and ask when they intended to get round to my fence! blush

The arrival of a package from a young girl I hardly know. She wanted to thank me for the help I had been giving her by email.

Our most recent surprise was at 6.00 this morning being woken by the phone! DD3 was off to hospital again and wanted us to have Bertie and Persie [#hysteriasetsin] She has developed a rash, fever, aching etc etc. She went to the GP yesterday and was told to put calamine on the rash confused

She's home now with antibiotics and instructions to rest hmm but still no diagnosis apart from 'It's a virus'

I had a shower at noon and made the bed and cleared up the kitchen at 1pm. I'm really impressed with myself for coping with two of the same age plus a three year old, day in, day out when I was her age because I'm blinking jiggered now grin

Off to see Mum next - maybe I can stay awhile if they offer me a bed.

When DD rang at lunchtime to say she had finally heard from the Motorists Insurance Bureau that they had accepted her application for compensation for injuries sustained in a road accident that was not her fault and where the driver that caused the accident just drove on without stopping. Her right arm was badly injured and she will never recover full strength and functionality in it and she also has a huge permanent unsightly scar covering about a quarter of her lower arm.

The MIB have spent the last year arguing that the accident was her fault but today's letter finally accepts her claim and that nothing she did contributed to the accident.

We have no idea how much she will get, and it doesn't really matter. It is the acceptance that, as she has said all along, the other driver caused the accident.
