DREAMS

I have had a recurrent dream since childhood that I am swamped by an enormous tidal wave. Even now, I occasionally have this dream and wake up terrified.

I really hope this is not what I long for

Hello Nonu, I had one of my recurrers last night ----its all based on knowing I've got to sit an exam any day but I suddenly realise I've not done any work towards it. Bizzarre considering I was quite good at exams and did get my OU a few years ago. I have a feeling its more about general anxiety (which I do have a lot of). Funny how it causes me to have such a definate dream that makes me wake up feeling really quite rattled.

I have a few recurring dreams and really hope I am not subconsciously wanting such things to happen.

Florence56 I think the anxiety dream about having sit an exam that you haven't studied or revised for is very common. In my case, it's always A level geography.

I just can't get to the exam room! I spend all of the dream being delayed, getting lost etc and never actually make it to the exam....

Hi Florence , Noodles & Move , I think what I was trying to say that the dream I have is not horrid , more about a person , that maybe we wish they were still around .

Nonu - I don't think any of us long to face an exam or other testing situation without being prepared for it, or to be overwhemed by a tidal wave of problems we cannot solve.

i would think that we dramatise a general problem or pre-occupation in our lives, presenting it as a specific situation that illustrates what is in our subconscious.

As for these books which say that if you dream of X it means Y - perhaps in some cases it does, but we all have different linkages in our brains that spark off at different things. If we think about a troubling dream ourselves, we often come up with what it represents better than any "Book of Dreams"

The brain is a really wonderful thing, how it helps to process things . IMO

Hello Absent and Nonu, am glad its not just me then! Mind you as a child I used to get those really weird ones about flying. I would be running away from something and would find myself thinking 'I'll fly away' so I'd sort of take off but would only be about waist height AND wearing little more than my wooly vest!

Or is that just me?

Florence, me too. I was good at exams but still have the 'exam dream' every so often. It must be a metaphor for something I've been delaying, I think.

When I was still teaching I always used to have the "class out of control" dream and wake up in a panic. I couldn't do anything I could in the waking world.

I also find if I am on the computer too late I dream about it all night with it going round and round and round. One night I was on GN all night. Now try to stop about 9.00 pm!!!!!

Florence I went through a period when I had 'flying' dreams so often that I really looked forward to getting to sleep in the hope that I would fly again. Many times in my dreams I would either jump from a high place and then fly or I would lie on my bed and 'will' myself up and into the air.

I think a lot of children dream of flying. It must be a kind of fledging, as baby birds do - in dreams you can take off, go where you want, do what you want - the beginnings of being adult and independent

I had recurrent dreams as a child, as an adult I had dreams where I was trying to tell people something urgent but nobody listened to me, then I had nightmare dreams that woke me in a snap in the middle of the night and left me unable to get back to sleep for quite a while because I tended to drift back into them, now all my dreams seem to be a surreal reworking of the day's events. Why my dreams move from stage to stage as my life progresses, I do not know but there are probably good physiological and psychological reasons

Those are the dreams I remember, of course, who knows what the ones I do not remember are about
