What are the trees doing where you are?

In particular, the ashes and the oaks.

I'm keeping an eye on these at present, because according to an old saying, it might be an indication of the sort of summer we might get!

"Ash is out before the oak, we will get a proper soak, oak is out before the ash, we will only get a splash"

Or something like that.......

Not heard that saying before Phoenix - just went and checked. Neither is out yet, but usually here the oak is last out, and also last to lose its' leaves. Maybe we have another summer like 76 to come.

"If the oak before the ash, then we'll only have a splash, if the ash before the oak, then we'll surely have a soak."

We had our oak cut down last Autumn, but I know it was always very late getting its spring leaves on.

All the trees very delayed. Will check any oak and ash I can see. Magnolias in flower but very lack lustre this year. Some years they are so glorious.

Neither ash nor oak have burst their buds here yet, though silver birch has today. The tips of sycamore twigs are looking positively pink and hawthorn is greening rapidly smile

Leaves have sprouted forth over the last two days in South Cheshire.
Ash before oak we shall have soak. Oak before Ash we shall have splash.

I will go and look at the trees. The oak is out the back the Ash out the front.
The Ash tree wins & that's through binoculars.

You will have us waving dowsing rods soon phoenix grin

There are still masses of blackthorn blossoming along the main road towards Manchester and now the magnolias have belatedly bloomed in their usual luxuriance. My young camellias' buds are about to burst open and the damson tree at the end of the garden is like a bridal veil - a good two or three weeks later than usual.

I've never heard this saying but I'll go to Faerie Woods this weekend to check.

Cherry blossom in full glory, apple too. Walnuts are the last here - and are just popping out their early rust red leaves before turning green. Oak, beech and chestnut all looking freshly green. I think we're perhaps at least 3 weeks ahead.

I've never heard this saying either - there's often a reason I like to think.smile

Lovely thread.

Our white lilac tree is usually in full blossom by the first week in May. This year the leaves and buds are only just showing now...!

Weeping Willow lovely and green. Weeping Silver Birch green. Lilac budding and the Camellias and Magnolia are looking beautiful.

Also noticed whilst travelling around the Cherry Blossoms are in top form too.

Our neighbour has a massive Oak and it looks as dead as a dodo at the moment. No idea about Ash trees sorry.

Cherry Blossom wonderful, magnolias blooming, Rowan coming into flower, hawthorn blooming, sycamore just beginning to leaf. Willows including pussy willow beautiful. A lot of the woodland trees tho are still waiting for something.
