Couldn't sleep and am up at 4.30. Dawn is lightening the sky in the East and I hear a bird singing.

So how many of you lot were out washing your faces in the dew this morning? Maybe it is too late for us to hope that this will make us young and beautiful, but we could always hope.

At this very moment there will be a crowd on the summit of Arthur's seat to welcome the rising sun on this May morning. As students, we always trudged up in the dark, carrying torches and wearing warm clothes, and waited facing East for the sky to go from black to navy blue, to duck egg blue to pink and gold and then to full sunlight. There were hymns and a prayer (added to the pagan celebrations by the first missionaries) before the descent, torches in pockets, and the long walk back to breakfast and a sleepy day of lectures and dozy tutorials.
