Good May morning Wednesday

Couldn't sleep and am up at 4.30. Dawn is lightening the sky in the East and I hear a bird singing.

So how many of you lot were out washing your faces in the dew this morning? Maybe it is too late for us to hope that this will make us young and beautiful, but we could always hope.

At this very moment there will be a crowd on the summit of Arthur's seat to welcome the rising sun on this May morning. As students, we always trudged up in the dark, carrying torches and wearing warm clothes, and waited facing East for the sky to go from black to navy blue, to duck egg blue to pink and gold and then to full sunlight. There were hymns and a prayer (added to the pagan celebrations by the first missionaries) before the descent, torches in pockets, and the long walk back to breakfast and a sleepy day of lectures and dozy tutorials.

Late for Good morning now!! Only just logged on today. Last night we had a huge thunderstorm in Dordogne - poor pansies. Was sunnybwhen we left for our drive north but a couple of hours into the trip we hit rain and had it in varying degrees - some very heavy - for the rest of the journey. Now in a hotel in Bernay - SW of Rouen. Lovely hotel and great restaurant. They gave me a bunch of lily of the valley to mark 1 May.
If it is fine we shall be tourists in Honfleur tomorrow - if not it will be a leisurely breakfast followed by a leisurely lunch before the derry any 5pm.

Good news with DD - hysterectomy went to plan and she was well enough to text me. Relief all round.

Hope you all have a peaceful night. B

Has been a lovely sunny day here and though chilly now was warm enough to have the big doors open until sunset! Played in the garden & park with DGDs today!

It was a lovely day until it clouded over in the afternoon when I was walking down to the post office, but it's been a golden evening.

Gorgeously warm and sunny here in Boston. No dew to wash my face in..........no garden! There`s a canal out at the front of the house..............maybe not!

Snap * Elegran* I too was awake at 4:30 am. I tried to go back to sleep but no such luck. In the end I got up and took the dogs out at 5:45 am. I remembered the old tradition but gave it a miss this year.

It's been a glorious day here in South Cheshire sunshine

Mamie Wed 01-May-13 15:23:05

Well the sun shone, we had a lovely walk, a picnic in the market hall and a visit to a garden. Just got back and the rain has started. The food we took went down well and there were lots of lovely things to eat and drink from everyone else. Rural France at its best!

St Andrews - May - North Sea - swim??????? What do you think!!!! grin

soop Wed 01-May-13 12:04:58

For those who know me well, today's good morning message is posted on yesterday's page. OOOPS!

annodomini Wed 01-May-13 11:16:05

Gracesmum, didn't you do the traditional May Day swim from the West Sands at St Andrews? No? Neither did I, but my mad medic sister did - and survived.

Gally Wed 01-May-13 10:40:03

Pouring with rain here in Fife - that's probably because the window cleaner came at 9 this morning hmm but at least the shrubs I planted on monday will get a good watering!

grannyactivist Wed 01-May-13 10:29:58

It's a gloriously sunny day here in East Devon. I waved my husband off this morning as I persuaded him to stick with our plan to join his parents for a few day's holiday in Cornwall. I'd have loved to join him, but it wouldn't be fair as I'm still coughing through the night. Today is my mother in law's 77th birthday - and the weather is beautiful, just like her!

gracesmum Wed 01-May-13 10:26:21

Washing my face in the morning dew? How I used to believe that!!grin Being in St A's rather than Edinburgh I never made it up Arthur's Seat on Mayday - hmm maybe that's why..........grin
Anyway plenty of dew on the grass here, but Grace got out on to the lawn before me, so no, I didn't!!

Lovely sunshine in North Leicestershire, so nice that I was going to take a cup of tea into the garden until some workmen started digging up the road right outside the gate. sad

Wall to wall sunshine here in Manchester - not sure how long it will be here for, but just so great to see blue sky

moomin Wed 01-May-13 08:28:25

Lovely picture elegran, here's hoping the sun breaks through in France for mamie and Butty. Sunny and windy (again) in Northumberland - hooray for May, my favourite month smile

Butty Wed 01-May-13 08:04:33

Mamie We were to have guests, but a broken down VW camper van, and the whole of France closed has delayed their arrival for a day or two. Fortunately, they are a very resourceful pair!

NfkDumpling Wed 01-May-13 08:01:41

sunshine in Norfolk. Lots of dew at 5.45 this morning when DGD2 woke me up but I didn't go out to wash my face - it's past redemption.

glassortwo Wed 01-May-13 07:52:46

Good morning, elegran love your description and the photo, mamie I hope the rain holds off for you celebrations. Have a good day everyone. sunshine

Mamie Wed 01-May-13 07:48:39

Yes I have seen the great blobs of rain further down Butty. May hold off here, but plenty tonight. Oddly enough we need it, because we have had to water the last few days. How are you celebrating today (or not)?

Butty Wed 01-May-13 07:27:12

Beautiful pic. Elegran. Instead of dew, will rain water do if I lift my face to the skies? We have lashings of the stuff.

Mamie Hope you have a dryer day than me with your celebrations.

Up early here preparing for the village celebration (bank holiday here) We all meet at the Mairie and drive off in shared cars for a walk and a picnic. We have made a ham and spinach bread and Millionaire's shortbread to share. Weather looks a bit grim!
