This is hilarious:

I know it's nothing to do with the accent thing Granjura.
I was just deviating from the thread.wink
I think I was actually reverse-trivialising. It started out as funny, but I don't like football either, and I like even less seeing violent thugs being paid lots of money and being seen as role-models for young people.
Joey Barton had a terrible reputation when he played for Newcastle, so in case anyone thought he was nice or harmless, I just wanted to set the record straight.

Greatnan Sat 04-May-13 20:11:56

No, I cannot see why a jokey thread about somebody none of you know should have put people's backs up. Sense of humour, folks?

laidback Sat 04-May-13 20:27:44

I do follow football(sorry!). I know who joey barton is and he is stupid. He's actually quite a talented football player but he is also as jane points out a thug, on and off the pitch. The reason he plays his football in France is that no british team would touch him with a bargepole because of his reputation. So greatnan was spot on and it is a funny clip! grin

Greatnan Sat 04-May-13 21:05:05

If I were younger, I might practise speaking English with a French accent, as it is quite sexy (well, it is when it is done by a French person!)

gillybob Sat 04-May-13 21:46:42

I am by no means defending the fact that Joey Barton did gain himself a bit of a bad reputation on the pitch but before we judge him as a person perhaps we should look at his very sad and challenging childhood. (I wonder I'd wiki whatsit mentions this??? )

I judge as I find and when I (unknowingly) met him on holiday he was nothing but a charming and perfectly decent young man.

And for the record Nonu very sexy in his swimming trunks. grin

Greatnan Sat 04-May-13 21:51:54

Somebody shoot me if I ever propose posting something light hearted in the future. I will stick to politics, they seem to be less controversial.

gillybob Sat 04-May-13 22:05:00

I wouldn't shoot you Greatnan no way. For a start you are too far away and I am a crap shot! (Joke)

I only defended Joey Barton after he was slated in a previous post. smile

I like the silly threads the best. smile

granjura Sat 04-May-13 22:06:55

Hey ho - how did we know that was meant to be light-hearted? Not in joke thread, was it, and the word 'stupid' is offensive to many, if we don't know the context. Now I am glad to hear it was in jest ... as you know so well, us teachers try very hard to use that word with children. It can be difficult on a Forum to know what the intention of a post and use of some words was.

So nothing to do with sense of humour at all. Some of us to pick up accents like sponges - I had a huge Stoke accent after working in a local engineering firm for a while ... so I can understand how his accent has changed in daily contact with the French- and that it does NOT make him stupid as such (even if he is a nasty man - which I have no idea about - even so, it would have nothing about his accent though, would it).

laidback Sat 04-May-13 22:08:20

Sorry Gilly I don't think a challenging childhood is an excuse for some of his actions. I never judge, give bods the benefit of the doubt or a second chance. Joey Barton is streetwize, fairly articulate and bright young man and no doubt he can be very charming. My OH worked at Man City when he played there. I can safely say he is a tw*t and stupid.

gillybob Sat 04-May-13 22:13:13

As I said earlier I speak as I find. I do happen to know that he had a terrible ( not challenging) childhood (which I know does not excuse bad behaviour on the pitch,) but what excuse do many other footballers, politicians,TV stars etc have when they act badly?

Ana Sat 04-May-13 22:24:51

I'm just amazed that some of us seem to think we are in a position to state quite categorically that Joey Barton is stupid!

petallus Sat 04-May-13 22:36:42

laidback articulate, bright AND stupid? confused

And was that twit or twat?

annodomini Sat 04-May-13 22:38:02

Saw him on Newsnight once being interviewed by Paxman and thought he held his own pretty well. In other words he does have a brain but doesn't always either use it or show it.

Ana Sat 04-May-13 22:39:25

Perhaps laidback wasn't talking about Joey Barton...grin

granjura Sat 04-May-13 22:43:08

... as said, don't know anything about the guy. If he is stupid or a tw*t - it has nothing to do with him picking up a French accent though - has it?

Over and out. Bonne nuit.

laidback Sat 04-May-13 22:53:42

I do feel for him if he had a terrible childhood. I used your word' 'challenging' I don't know the details. I only know the privileged and multi millionaire he is now.He must have worked hard to play in the premier league, I know natural ability and talent also play a part. Why did he insist on pissing it away. That makes me angry. I wish more footballers were role models. I know some have foundations and do a hell of a lot of good works beyond the pitch. I don't think there are any excuses for acting badly are there? Ana I have many first hand references for him being stupid.

Ana Sat 04-May-13 22:56:13

But how do you define 'stupid'? confused

It seems hardly worse than calling someone a 'cretin'.

Ana Sat 04-May-13 22:58:58

Sorry, I meant 'hardly better'. Stupid seems such a derogatory term, no matter how much you team it with 'bright' and 'articulate'...

Sel Sat 04-May-13 23:04:58

I am really failing to see why this is hilarious Greatnan or indeed why you deem him stupid confused

Greatnan Sat 04-May-13 23:10:27

I thought the fact that I said 'This is hilarious' might have given a slight clue that I was being light-hearted. I put jokes on the joke thread and this does not qualify. I certainly did not expect to have the thread surgically dissected.
Would it have been O.K. if I had just said 'Somewhat misguided footballer'?
I am very tempted to use some of the phrases that have been hurled at me in the past on the subject of relaxing and not taking things too seriously that are clearly meant in jest.
I still find the video very amusing and I still don't know any other English person who speaks English with a French accent. I have not lived all my years in Monaco, Brussels and France in complete isolation - I have lived and worked with very many English expats.

laidback Sat 04-May-13 23:12:14

Lacking common sense. Insensible. Indifference. I dunno my stupid is obviously different from your stupid.

laidback Sat 04-May-13 23:16:04

Sorry greatnan I enjoyed the clip. I don't really give a shit about joey barton.

petallus Sat 04-May-13 23:22:33

Ana i missed that grin

Sel Sat 04-May-13 23:25:09

greatnan you are very quick to criticise others if they post something you don't agree with. You titled this video "hilarious" - I didn't think it was. The guy doesn't speak French, ok. Lots of people adopt a pseudo accent in another country in an attempt to fit in. What's the problem? Why try and belittle him?

Greatnan Sat 04-May-13 23:45:58

I am now finding the nit-picking over my casual use of 'stupid' even funnier than the video. It wasn't said to a class of children, or the man himself, or even to anybody who might know him.
