Charleygirl yes I do realise how expensive it is to live in London the comment was said "very tongue in cheek" as we are constantly reminded that Frank has a top of the range London pension,maybe he forgets the years other people have worked to build up their finances but hey-ho.

Of course we could need the service of some charity and that is why I support Cancer Research UK.
I went to a funeral a little while ago where somebody had passed away with dementia but he had been a CRUK supporter for years.
He had expressed a wish that his funeral fund went to CRUK and he was in no fit state to answer if he wanted his funeral fund to go to a dementia charity towards the end.
We all felt we would have to respect his wish for the fund to go to CRUK even though it seemed a little odd.
I spoke to the bereavement minister and he said he had seen this happen before and he understood why we felt this should happen.
With regard to my estate I am leaving it to my daughters to give a bit of money to some charity if they wish but as the money has been built up by the work of previous generations as well as my late wife and myself I regard it as their right to receive it.

I worked in London and had a lot of the employees where I worked paid to get the provincial pension when they retired.
I paid in at the higher rate to get the London rate pension as I did not know what life would bring when I started work.
I retired to Birmingham.
Somebody came up with the bright idea that if we lived outside London we should get paid the provincial rate even if we had paid in to get a London pension.
Somebody did threaten legal action on the basis the London pension had been paid for and it made no difference to our employer where we lived after retirement.
The London pension rate is still being paid to pensioners living outside London.

Of course none of us know when we might be in need of the services of some charity. When my daughter broke her ankle badly on a mountain slope, the ambulance men climbed up to find her - and both the fire service and ambulance are staffed by volunteers in New Zealand. So think on, Frank, you or yours might need some charity in time!

I won't have much to leave, as I used my half share of the matrimonial home to get both my daughters their first little houses, when they were about 20. They cost £8,000 and £12,000, in 1982, and they both ended up with properties worth over £300,000. I was happy to rent a studio until I could buy another little house for myself. I need very little living space!

I'm sure most people would like to leave something to their children and grandchildren but that doesn't prevent them from also leaving something to a charity.

It's natural to want to help your own family, but it's also nice to try to help people you don't know, if and when you have the means to do so.

Don"t think we do , I think the mould was broken when Hunterf was made .

Galen, I sincerely hope that because I also have a "London pension" that you are not seeing me in the same light as HunterF!!!!! Sorry but I do not know how to put the names in bold.
Glammanana, it is expensive to live here so I would not bother changing your holiday money unless of course Frank's bank gives a better rate of interest than mine!!

I think it may be the other way round Greatnan - the charities do read Gransnet and work has got round about The London Pension.

It's mystifies me as to how you would expect Charities to know you have 2 daughters and four granddaughters,why are you bothered about this? we get a few requests for charity donations but only stay with the 3 we have always supported,Lifeboats,Dogs Trust and Clare House Hospice we don't make a song and dance about other charity request's just file them in recycle bin.

My sons and their families have made it clear to me that they can stand on their own feet, though of course I hope there will be something left for them when I shuffle off. They would be pleased if I left something to a favourite charity.

They know how rich you are with your London pension

Has it occurred to you, Frank, that some of the charities may not read Gransnet, and so will have no idea of your family's needs?

We get them all the time as I suspect most do.

I would say though how can they be aware of your situation?

The widower's mite? I have a much bigger family than you, some of them struggling with unemployment, but I still manage to make my monthly donation to my chosen charity. Spread it about a bit, Frank, it may come back tenfold!
