My DD's second baby was due on 20th May, but I kept on saying it would be early. Tuesday is the day we have my GS and, usually, his mum brings him round to us. Needless to say this morning we were late (for us) waking up and when I switched on my mobile at 6.40 it immediately beeped with a message from DD to say that DGS had woken early, she wasn't sure if she was having pains, but either she or DSiL would bring Jacob round early. I texted back and suggested that, possibly, it wasn't a good idea for either of them to be gallivanting and we would drive over to pick him up.

When we got there at 7.30ish, DD was showered and dressed and sitting on the sofa with a tens machine on her stomach. Jacob was, unusually, watching the television and her DH was nowhere to be seen, but it turned out he was very thoughtfully typing out DD's birth plan which she had written last night.

I suppose we left just after eight - we left DD leaning against the hall walls, having a contraction, but still not sure if she was in labour. when we got home we had a busy morning as there was breakfast to do and neither DH nor I had had a shower this morning. I was just debating whether or not to text DD or DSil, when my phone beeped again (ten o'clock) and I was staggered to read that all was well and I had another granddaughter! So I am proud to announce the arrival of Jessica Annabelle, 8 lbs 6 oz, at 9.45 a.m. this morning.

I have since spoken to my son in law and he tells me that he persuaded my DD to go to hospital as the contractions were coming every two and a half minutes. They got there at nine and the midwives pronounced DD to be ready, my new GD was born about forty five minutes later.

I am so pleased and excited for them all; I have a fantastic relationship with my DD which is totally unlike my also lovely relationship with my DS and I am happy to think that she will have a special relationship with her new DD.

Sorry I haven't been back before - and more thanks for the continuing good wishes. We are still looking after DGS (he's having his nap at the moment). DD has still not been discharged from hospital - she had to wait for Jessica's newborn and hearing tests and, whilst the hospital are happy, DD is not: remember the lovely colour I described yesterday? DD now reckons that Jessica is looking rather yellow, so they are testing her for jaundice - her brother had it quite badly when he was born.

I had a text from DD this morning describing Jessica's long toes as being suitable for hanging from trees! I then reminded her that her DB's toes are just the same.

The hospital is rather busy as well, so that is holding up their discharge.

Congratulations GillieB flowers It sounds very like my daughter's second one. She spent all afternoon on Boxing Day saying she probably wasn't in labour until her husband brought Gs 1 round and took her to hospital at about 7.45pm . The baby was born at 9.10 pm and as Sil couldn't get a phone signal in the hospital I didn't hear about it till next morning , by which time they were already home!

Thank you so much for all your wishes. We went into hospital with GS to see them all - and how well my DD looked. Jessica was fast asleep in the crib and hardly made a sound whilst we were there (am sure it won't last). She looks just like her older brother, but, as I said earlier, her colour is better; I also think that her hair will be lighter.

DD had the baby is the RVI Birthing centre in Newcastle - what a wonderful place it is and so much nicer than last time she was there in February 2011. She gave birth in the same room that she will stay in overnight - all the equipment just sort of folded into cupboards in the wall - amazing. Thanks to all the lovely staff there, too.
