Well the actual path of tornados in totally unpredictable in terms of a few miles of where you are on the ground. Supply Anderson shelters perhaps.

The USA must have the money though why do they not build more underground storm shelters and not be complacent about risks when there are warnings. It would at least save lives.

Aberfan was just so incredibly sad and was avoidable. The news images were unforgetable. I lived in Bristol at the time and before that event my parents used to make trips out across the Severn Bridge into the Valleys.

Those black spoil tips completely dominated the landscape, looming above the towns which were just built along the valley bottoms. In subsequent years they were all removed or made safe.

It's absolutely awful but why are houses continually being built in an area known for such dreadful tornadoes that have caused death and destruction in the past? I can't imagine how the parents must be feeling.

I remember being in Japan and seeing instructions on the hotel door about what to do in the event of an earthquake. I just hoped a bad one wouldn't happen but I felt movement from time to time which was a weird experience over which there is no control - and that's the scary part.

I agree Tegan.

I've just got back from work so I'll probably put the news on to catch up with what's happened but after that I'm going to switch off. I do reach a point as well where I feel that the news coverage starts to be intrusive and it starts to feel a bit voyeuristic.

I'm afraid I've had to turn the radio off for the rest of the day. Head in the sand I know but I can't hear it every hour. sad

How tragic for the families affected such awful news,my heart is with the families who have lost family and their homes.

I can still remember the Aberfan disaster so clearly; it was awful hearing the news from Oklahoma until I then heard about the children and it then went from terrible news to unbearably tragic news. Yes J; first thing I thought of was Aberfan sad.

You are right Sel it does put things into perspective.

j08 Tue 21-May-13 11:05:08

Those poor children in their school. Brings back thoughts of Aberfan. So bad.
