Do you think your sons/daughters will talk to the grandchildren about online porn?

There was a feature on Radio 4 as I was driving this afternoon and the descriptions of the porn and its influence on children were quite graphic. One 16 year old girl described how her (also 16 year old) boyfriend liked to have sex whilst watching rape videos on his smartphone situated on the pillow. He would re-enact the rape scenario with the girl herself - who did not object because it was her first relationship and she did not know whether it was what everyone did. How very sad.

They then had the agony aunt from the Sun talking about the letters she gets from boys as young as 11 who have become addicted to online porn. She was expressing her horror at this - mind you the Sun is not exactly in the front line when it somes to resisting the objectification of women!

I think and hope so. They grew up in a home where any questions they asked about sex and relationships were always answered openly and without prevarication and I hope and expect them to be as comfortable answering their own children's questions.

Certainly if my grandchildren asked me anything I would answer the question they asked.

the eleven year old

The problem is that the other chidren who have already come across abusive images online will want to show them to other children. It will become a sensational topic for them to huddle together and chat about, and show to children they think will be shocked.

My son has raised this subect with my grandson last year, when he was 12. Too late - he had aready been shown some photos online. He said he wasn't interested and 'a boy was mean to me.' My son picked him up every day from school in case of any bullying. The school was informed and a number of children disclosed they had been shown abusive images whilst at school. Parents were asked to speak to their children in the first instance.

Left to his own devices, my grandson is still naive and immature, compared with some 13 year olds. Despite this he was shown these photos. He's more interested in Minecraft and robots. He is occasionally asked if he comes across anything that shouldn't be there on his computer, and he says he would shout up if he does, but he hasn't mentioned anything yet. His computer is in the sitting room.

I think chidren shoud be given sufficient age-apropriate infirmation and told they must tell their parents or a teacher if anyone shows them such images.
