First on the list should be Tegan's ferret (it will deal with her rodent problem!)

Lol Kittylester....in our case DGD 18 months and tough as old boots is fine.....its the DGS aged 4 who shreeks! Mind you I can go one better than bees, but I am not sure I'm that happy about it....in the scullery in an old enamel bowl is the remains of an otter spraint. From time to time husband brings them home, leaves them to soak and them sifts through to see what they have been eating. He's done it with owl 'pellets' too! YUm.

Have you taste tested yet, When ?

kittylester Sun 02-Jun-13 17:09:15

DGD1 (4 and a drama queen) sees bees, thinks bee stings and shrieks! Hopefully, we'll get some more next year in the new location.

HildaW Sun 02-Jun-13 17:02:20

Kittylester.....our bees are near an old wall that quite near the back door and that bothered daughter too. However, I read up on the 'social/mason bee and evidently they rarely sting. Unlike normal honey bees they are very placid and you more or less have to squash then in your hand for them to attack so we ignore them and they ignore us. Its lovely sitting our there in the sun listening to them droning!

kittylester Sun 02-Jun-13 16:56:45

DGS2 (17 months) doesn't appear to have broken his teeth yet but it is surely just a matter of time. This week he has fallen down over twice managing to land on his face both times! Panic phone call for DH to rush over, in scruffs because he is decorating blush, brandishing surgical gloves and wipes.

Hilda we hung our bee shelter too close to the back door and all the inhabitants liked to come out and greet us and, especially, the grandchildren - cue lots of girly screaming! We moved it and they moved out - the bees that is! grin

HildaW Sun 02-Jun-13 16:26:24

Have just spotted that two of the 'tubes' in my bee shelter have been taken up by mason bees....yippee I'm going to be a bee Mum!

Nelliemoser cheddar is just down the road. There is a man in the farmer's market which is held every Wednesday right outside the tribunal building, he brings them in. You have to get them first thing as he quickly sells out.
My system is that my driver stops the car at his stall, I hold up fingers as to how many pun nets I want. The little man brings them to me a d I pay him.
Bob, my driver then takes them and puts them in his fridge until the evening when he collects me
They are then nicely chilled to make the icecream.

Galen Sun 02-Jun-13 15:13:47

Thanks. I'll try that when I return from my cruise.

inthefields Sun 02-Jun-13 14:53:48

Nelliemoser ....you are driving me to confess that I am the worlds laziest cook!! if it needs churning, I skip to the next recipe grin

So perhaps a electric gadget would be a good idea

I just have visions of it sharing space with the bread machine, at the back of the cupboard.
<<has sudden vision of the progeny, should machines decide to procreate in dark cupboard spaces. The first breadstick lolly maker? >>

just for galen [smile}
www.nigella.com/recipes/view/ONE-STEP-NO-CHURN-COFFEE-ICE-CREAM-5550

You may like this original version, but I made it several times for the daughter with craving, and we preferred it minus the liqueur and with ordinary mellow coffee. The espresso was far too bitter for our taste, in this recipe!

Nelliemoser Sun 02-Jun-13 13:51:23

inthe A not too expensive ice cream maker is worth having they come in between £30 and £300. See my previous post about them in
"Today I have been mainly."

It does the churning for you.

Nelliemoser Sun 02-Jun-13 13:43:48

Galen Plain strawberries and cream ice cream is lovely. Nothing you can buy compares at all, they don't make it with just strawberries sugar and cream. I am a bit too far from Cheddar to benefit. I hope the local ones will soon come on stream everything is a bit late this year in Chehsire. I wiil look in our Market on Wednesday.

Galen Sun 02-Jun-13 13:36:05

Thanks. I have a waitrose recipe for a scrumptious peach and amoretto icecream that uses their fresh custard as the base.

whenim64 Sun 02-Jun-13 13:19:04

Thanks inthefields. I'm going to make that right now! grin

Movedalot Sun 02-Jun-13 13:12:57

Thanks inthe If I get tempted I shall blame you and Galen for the weight gain (that and my lack of will power!)

inthefields Sun 02-Jun-13 13:10:20

I have a good (and equally simple) recipe for egg free coffee ice-cream which I found when DD was pregnant and craved coffee ice.... think its a Nigella one.
Will go hunt

Galen Sun 02-Jun-13 13:06:03

sad I can't eat egg yolkssad

inthefields Sun 02-Jun-13 13:03:08

8 egg yolks
7oz caster sugar
8 fl oz double cream
juice of 2 large (or 3 small) lemons

1. Use an electric whisk to beat the yolks until they are pale and very thick ^you will be there all day doing it by hand !!

2. Add the sugar and whisk again until blended and thick

3. Add the lemon juice and whisk briefly - only enough to ensure it is blended

3. Whisk the cream to soft peak stage, then fold it into the egg mixture ^I use a balloon whisk)

Pour into a shallow plastic box, pop on the lid and put into the freezer I use the superfreeze option on mine if I want quick results
... you can also pour directly into ramekins

After 2 hours, stir the mix so the frozen outer edges are pulled into the middle. On super freeze, using a largish shallow box, I can eat 4 hours after starting grin

(thanks and acknowledgement to Mrs Beeton ..... bless her!)

whenim64 Sun 02-Jun-13 13:02:00

grin

kittylester Sun 02-Jun-13 12:58:49

when, I bet she's eating it before moved gets there. If inthefields comes back soon, do you think it will be ready for supper? grin

whenim64 Sun 02-Jun-13 12:51:28

Hurry up, inthefields! I've got lemons, sugar, cream, eggs, whisk, bowl, space in the freezer.......all I need is your recipe. grin Mouth watering in readiness x

Galen Sun 02-Jun-13 12:50:45

I'd love it please.
The strawberry is easy. It's double cream strawberries and sugar.
Mix in liquidiser, then throw into gelateria. Half an hour later voila:- icecream.

inthefields Sun 02-Jun-13 12:42:18

movedalot Lemon ice-cream is THE simplest recipe in the world, and does not need a machine, or constant stirring!
Happy to share the recipe if you would like it smile

<<conceals the fact that it is also a cholesterol bomb in a bowl>>

Galen Sun 02-Jun-13 12:42:05

grin

Movedalot Sun 02-Jun-13 12:37:54

OK Galen can I come to you too! I love ice cream but please don't tell Glass (hope she is not looking!)
