This seems a typically surly British attitude towards a) service and b) children disguised rather poorly as humour. Even if the food is good I wouldn't want to eat somewhere run by someone with such an unpleasant and arrogant attitude.

When asked if they served children, the manager of a restaurant I used to frequent would reply, "yes madam/sir, how do you like them - boiled or fried?"

Like it sun had something similar on Fb this week. smile

Drove past a pub the other day with a sign outside which said "strange yellow orb seen in sky - come and watch it from our garden"

Movedalot Thu 30-May-13 14:53:18

Laziness?

KatyK Thu 30-May-13 14:47:57

Movedalot - I agree. Why would people not use them when they are there?

Movedalot Thu 30-May-13 14:35:08

Katy when waiting at trafiic lights last week we saw a big sign which read:

The floor is not an ashtray, please use the silver ones on the table!

Shame they needed to make the point. sad

When we were in the Lake District once there was a sign outside a pub near one of Wordsworth's homes which said 'I wandered lonely as a cloud and then thought no sod it I'll go for a pint instead'

The front of the menu is good and, apart from the last time, we have always had excellent service and great food. I think there was a staff problem in the kitchen last time and they were very apologetic and didn't charge for my meal.

Imo he is trying to say what he wants in a jovial way. Some years ago he had a sign saying the current Chancellor of the Exchequer was banned! Can't remember his name or what he had done to offend.

In the other pub he runs he has a notice something like - this pub has been standing for over 300 years. It has beams, the floors are uneven etc. I think he is just trying to make a point.

The second pub is renowned for its ales and is the one Nick Clegg visited when he was electioneering. It is always full.

The first one is renowned for its food as well as its ales and, again, is always full.

I would prefer to know the landlord's attitude to children before I go in rather than finding out afterwards. When ours were young and children were not allowed in all pubs we used to avoid the ones with big signs saying 'Children Welcome' as they seemed to attract brats!

What's the front of the menu like?

nanaej Wed 29-May-13 22:58:34

I think it is rude rather than clever.

I fully agree that being a customer has responsibilities, such as making sure you and your 'party' are polite and behave so other customers/staff are not disturbed. Equally a pub /shop/ restaurant is offering a service and should do so courteously and in a welcoming fashion.

I'm with J08 on this one..sounds like a smart-arsed git.

S/he could simply have said 'well behaved children are welcome' or
'We do not welcome families at this pub as it is for traditional drinkers only'

Aka Wed 29-May-13 22:26:54

I saw this recently
"Unsupervised children will be fed espresso and given a free kitten to take home"

glammanana Wed 29-May-13 22:10:22

number sometimes I think parents are of the opinion that Landlords provide an inclusive child minding service in with their food orders hmm

york46 Wed 29-May-13 21:59:26

A country pub near us has a sign outside "Customers required - No experience necessary as full training will be given". This always makes me smile when I see it!

janeainsworth Wed 29-May-13 21:44:54

Why does Basil Fawlty spring to mind grin

numberplease Wed 29-May-13 20:23:39

Having seen how some kids (and their parents) behave in pubs, I quite like the sound of this landlord!

Marelli Wed 29-May-13 18:50:09

I really like that - in fact I think I'd like the owner! grin

j08 Wed 29-May-13 18:43:47

I would n' t go there. He sounds a grumpy old sod.

vegasmags Wed 29-May-13 18:39:35

I have a very old pub sign in my kitchen, bearing the legend: Children are welcome in our grill smile

Pete Wed 29-May-13 18:37:11

grin

Movedalot Wed 29-May-13 17:50:26

It doesn't seem to put anyone off! At least his views are open.

sunseeker Wed 29-May-13 17:11:16

Love it grin

This is on the back of the menu at one of our very popular local pubs: SMALL PRINT

We Use nuts! – Walnuts, Pinenuts, Cashews and Macadamia, sometimes even the odd Brazil.
In fact our Chef has a laminated wall-chart of shelled nuts on the kitchen door!

*

Please trip up a waiter if you require a glass or jug of iced water

*

Complaints are taken very seriously – so do not complain just because you are tired,
have fallen out with your wife, or were late for work this morning.
Genuine complaints will of course be dealt with in a very offhand manner.

*

I have the most fantastic insurance cover – which is very expensive in order
to cover all eventualities. Vexatious litigants will be pursued for their shirt!

My Policy on Children…

It has come to my attention that some people make a great effort to raise their children in the correct fashion. They do not inflict their precious offspring onto anyone else, including my staff, and they encourage their little nippers to eat normal food.

Some industrious parents are even able to stop their children yelling and picking my flowers, this is to be commended.

SOME PARENTS DO NOT…

We have no children’s play area or climbing frame, there is a reason for this – it is not an omission or oversight and as for high chairs --- Please ask your MP (when he has settled his expense claim) to enforce their provision.
